A Security Council trip to a crisis zone. A walk-in to show that #GirlsCount. Action on bringing Daesh to justice, International Women’s Day, and the race against the clock to stop the biggest humanitarian crisis since the United Nations was invented. It’s all in this week’s “12 Tweets” recap.

1. Shining a spotlight on the #LakeChadBasin

The United Nations Security Council visited 4 countries in 5 days to bring awareness to a forgotten crisis in the Lake Chad region of Africa. As Matthew Rycroft said: the Lake Chad Basin Crisis will be neglected no more.

2. The heart of the crisis: #UNSCinNigeria

As part of the #UNSCinNigeria leg of the Lake Chad Basin trip, Matthew Rycroft and other ambassadors visited Maiduguri, the epicentre of of the Boko Haram crisis.

3. Ambassadors meet Refugees in Cameroon

2.3 million people have been displaced in the Lake Chad Basin thanks to Boko Haram, economic crisis, & climate change. In the Far North region of Cameroon, ambassadors had the chance to hear some of their stories.

4. #GirlsCount

Along with ONE, Connie Britton (Nashville, Friday Night Lights), Robin Wright (House of Cards), the Deputy Secretary-General, and a few brave young women from Chibok, we took part in a “walk-in” to take a stand for the 130 million girls who don’t have access to education.

5. #GirlsCount (even more)

Unacceptable. But changeable. The Global Goals set a target of quality education for all by 2030. If we work together, we can achieve that. Take a stand for girls’ education here.

Amal Clooney and Yezidi survivor Nadia Murad took centre-stage at the United Nations to call for justice to be dealt to Daesh for their heinous crimes. Nadia’s passionate plea for action: “Why is it taking so long?”

8. Daesh Survivor & UNODC Goodwill Ambassador raises her voice

Nadia Murad survived the unspeakable, being trafficked by Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL). Now she’s speaking out to hold them accountable and bring justice for her people in Iraq.

9. António Guterres on ending the scourge of SEA

After International Women’s Day, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres issued his 20th tweet on eliminating the scourge of sexual exploitation and abuse.

10. #WomensDay at the UN

With the help of Anne Hathaway, UN Women celebrated International Women’s Day with a strong message on paid parental leave. This year’s theme was “women in the changing world of work”.

11. First women NGO rep address Security Council on #Afghanistan

It took 37 years, but it happened.

12. #4famines: largest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the United Nations

Over 20 million people in Somalia, Northeast Nigeria, Yemen, and South Sudan are facing starvation or famine. Head of United Nations OCHA reported what he saw on recent visits to some of these areas.
