Apple’s Customer Letter might hint at a far more daunting security issue

Today, Apple released a letter to its customers.

Everybody agrees, it’s an intense letter. It will likely be a long fight and it will be an important one. Apple standing up against the US government is huge in itself.

However, there is a small detail, that troubles me even more, than the incident itself: To me, the way Apple argues suggests, that there actually is a way for Apple, to put a modified version of iOS on my locked and passcode protected device, without wiping my personal data.

If this is true — and I’m in no way an expert in this field or have any inside information — it constitutes a security problem, that should trouble all of us. Because it might mean, that somebody will get the job done. Even if it might not be Apple.

What do you think? I’m @ralf on Twitter and would love to hear your opinion.
