The clay is out of the bag! We can finally announce that Clayxels (the Unity Awards nominated plugin that adds interactive clay sculpting to Unity) has joined Unbound. With this first blog post we would like to show you what we are preparing and why this should be exciting for existing Clayxels users as well as newcomers who might never have opened a professional game engine in their life!

Woah, what is going on exactly?

If you are an existing Clayxels user, don’t panic! Nothing is changing, well, aside from the name of our Discord where we’ll keep on giving you help and support. Even if you’ve never used a game engine before, this news is for anyone passionate about games! We’re here to show you a bigger picture that includes folks of all skill levels. This is where the story of Clayxels joining Unbound becomes so special!

At Unbound we’ve been hard at work making a standalone, scalable volumetric engine accessible to everyone — and now we are incorporating all the good stuff that our existing community loves about making games using virtual clay. Similar to voxels, we call these building blocks clayxels (They are technically speaking Signed Distance Functions. But that’s a story for another geekier blog post). Clayxels are what enable us to make this playful creation experience accessible to professionals and hobbyists alike. However, we believe it has potential far beyond mere asset creation.

We have a big vision, but we want to get there in small steps and involve you early.

About that, did we mention our Discord already? We really would love to have our existing Clayxels users as well as newcomers be part of this new project. Rather than develop behind closed doors and emerge with a final product we want to get the community involved up front! In order to do that, we’ve divided our larger idea into smaller phases, the first of which we’re developing right now.

It’s a bit like a fantasy console, but rather than using sprites or polygons it’s based on fully procedural, forever editable, remixable, super-tiny-on-disk, volumetric 3d virtual clay.

Let’s be clear, we’re not here to compete with your professional tools of choice. Nor do we want to pile another regular game on your already plenty long backlog. We’re here to try to fill the void at the intersection of making and playing games. We just think crafting games can be as fun as playing them. We hope you’ll join us on this new and exciting journey.
