It was barely past 8:00 am and the sun told everyone it was going to be in full force. Little by little students trickled out of their parents’ vehicles toting yoga mats, bottles of water, lunch boxes, and apprehension in their faces. A few who knew each other huddled while others stood to the side.

At precisely 9:01 we made our way to the classrooms, with Kim and Mary ready for the first day of teaching writing.

The elementary group practiced yoga.

The practice inspired the students to write about breathing and wind.

The middle school group enjoyed a walk to the botanical garden.

And then created their own zen gardens.

Which inspired some poetry.

As campers left for the day, the apprehension in their faces was gone. Students were calm, happy, and ready to come back for another day of Young Writers Camp.
