Implications and Possibilities of Artificial Intelligence in Music Creation

Music has long been an expression of humanity and passion. The advent of music-generating artificial intelligence (AI) presents both possibilities and challenges. AI has impressive capabilities to replicate voices, modify music, and mimic instruments. However, there are emerging concerns about its impact on music creation and the importance of human involvement in the process, leaving AI’s role in the music industry uncertain. Despite this, AI-generated songs continue to gain popularity online.

AI Models For Music Generation

Machine-learning technology has given rise to various AI models designed for music generation. Some notable models include:

  • MuseNet by OpenAI — This model utilizes machine learning to generate lyrics and instrumental beats. It can create 4-minute-long musical compositions with various instruments by predicting patterns of harmony, rhythm, and style.
  • Amadeus Code —This model breaks down melodies of songs uploaded by the user to instantly create new melodies, chord progressions, and lyrics inspired by the inputted media.
  • AIVA- Original symphonies and musical pieces may be created through its preset algorithms of numerous musical styles.
  • So-Vitz-SVC- This AI model has an extensive database of artists’ voices and uses AI to map them onto audio files. It can replace existing voices in a song with AI-generated vocals from a chosen artist.

Utilizing AI in Music Creation- Uses

These AI models can replicate playing instruments in a fraction of the time it would take humans. Google’s unreleased MusicLM, for example, can create songs from a text description in minutes, reducing the time, talent, and resources needed for music production.

Additionally, AI is a tool for replicating voices and modifying music. AI models like Amadeus Code and So-Vitz-SVC can modify and replicate existing songs with machine learning.

Due to its public availability, an influx of AI-generated songs has appeared online with beats, lyrics, and vocals generated through machine learning — creating songs in the style of famous artists that generate hundreds of thousands of streams online.

Songs generated by AI software have struck likeness in fans. “Heart on My Sleeve,” a track where Drake and The Weeknd’s voices were used in a song with a novel beat and lyrics, was met with positivity and excitement from fans online, raking in roughly 9 million views. A Tiktok user by the name of Ghostwriter977 claims to have executed this soundtrack fully with artificial intelligence.

“The best Drake drop in a decade and it’s AI,” said one Tiktok user.

The popularity of the song, though it has since been taken down from platforms like TikTok and Spotify, reveals a clear market for this AI-produced content. Numerous AI-created songs, using the audio mapping method and lyric generation, continue to be met with positivity online as users create tracks mimicking their prominent artist of choice.

Concerns

The accessibility and efficiency of AI music-generating software raise concerns about an overproduction of music. If widely available, it could saturate the market and inflate the number of musicians, potentially diluting the value of human-created music.

Increased accessibility to high-level music production through AI-generated content may discourage real human engagement in learning instruments and creating original music. This could have implications for the future of music as a form of human expression.

Looking Forward

Similar to the music-generating software we’ve discussed today, our goal is to use these projects as tools to elevate human performance in a variety of fields, but we must also be conscious of the issues that surround this machinery.

While AI-generated music has gained popularity, questions remain about its authenticity compared to human-created art. Music is deeply intertwined with human emotion and expression, which AI may struggle to replicate fully. AI creations are derived from existing works and lack the inherent novelty and creativity of human expression. While AI can assist and augment the creative process, it cannot replace human-created music and should be seen as a tool rather than a vessel for complete artistic creation.
