As a senior majoring in information science and contemporary European studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I had the unique opportunity last year to participate in the State University of New York’s Model EU Simulation. This valuable experience was made possible through the generous funding provided by the European Union. The simulation not only allowed me to establish new friendships and connections but also provided insights into the intricate planning, negotiations, and coordination required for the functioning of the European Union.
In this simulation, I assumed the role of Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib, representing Belgium in the Foreign Affairs Council. The room I was in during the simulation served as the backdrop for discussions and negotiations among the participating members. In preparation for my role, I delved into extensive research on Belgium’s policies and positions, as well as the personal policies of Ms. Lahbib herself.
The commitment to embodying the views and perspectives of the individuals we were emulating was widespread among my peers. This led to spirited negotiations, particularly on contentious issues such as those related to Ukraine. The experience not only deepened my understanding of the complexities involved in international relations but also highlighted the importance of thorough preparation and diplomatic skills in such contexts. Overall, the Model EU Simulation was a transformative experience that enriched my academic journey and provided a practical understanding of the workings of the European Union.
