The Uncharted Journalism Fund is excited to announce its fifth grant recipient: Sarah Cox.

Support from the Uncharted Journalism Fund will help enable Cox to publish a science-based series on endangered species in The Narwhal.

“We will dive deeply into efforts to save some of B.C.’s most iconic endangered species,” said Cox, “and examine what’s at stake as the province prepares to introduce historic legislation to protect species at risk.”

Cox’s project asks tough and uncharted questions about the political motivations behind these initiatives and seeks to present these stories in a new way.

Cox’s application was selected from more than twenty applications for this round of funding.

The Uncharted Journalism Fund was started with the intent to encourage adventurous journalism initiatives in or about British Columbia.

“At a time when journalists themselves often seem like a species at risk, I’m glad that we’re able to support a project like Sarah’s,” said Phillip Smith, co-dean of the fund.

We’re proud to support Sarah’s project and are excited to see the results, he added.

Application period opens

The Uncharted Journalism Fund will start accepting applications June 1 for its next grant to encourage adventurous journalism initiatives in or about British Columbia.

Founded and supported by a small group of private citizens concerned about the shrinking state of journalism yet excited about possibilities of new media and technologies, the fund issues grants of up to $3,000, in whole or in part, four times per year to adventurous or innovative journalism projects.

Successful applicants could be traditional reporters with an important scoop but without the resources to pursue it. The grant could be used to pay for all or part of a larger investigation, from offsetting costs or learning new skills to paying for travel to remote regions.

Successful applicants could also be those with innovative ideas for the publishing or distribution of written stories, video or audio, data analysis and visualizations, and so on.

The innovation mandate is broad by design, reflecting the rapidly changing field of journalism. However, we should note that throwing a drone in your proposal does not necessarily make it innovative.

The deadline to submit an application is July 31st at midnight.

Applicants can apply online.

Before doing so, we recommend reviewing these Frequently Asked Questions.
