Just a few short weeks ago the Uncharted Journalism Fund trustees met at Creative Coworkers in Railtown. Over cupcakes, we each presented our selections from the March 31st round of applications and then discussed the applications in detail before moving on to voting. The result of that meeting was a decision on our second grant recipient: Ian Hinkle.

Ian Hinkle

Ian Hinkle is a documentary filmmaker and media producer living on the B.C. coast. His documentary film work often deals with issues of conservation and, increasingly, the ocean. From climate change to shark conservation to oceans plastics, his work as producer, director and cinematographer stretches over two decades — from The Living Coast (Discovery Channel, 1997) to Reaching Blue (CBC, 2014), to the new feature documentary Albatross (2017).

For his Uncharted application, Hinkle proposed to work with a team of seasoned photographers and video shooters on the roughest marine conditions that hit the south coast, to capture images and video of the Salish Sea when the storms kick up. The team will put cameras on the water and capture images that mainstream media outlets often don’t have the time and resources to get.

This is an adventurous take on storytelling because it is a new and novel experiment: to provide imagery to media that can have a subtle impact on the stories being published, while providing new perspectives on the stories being told about the B.C. coast and the risks to our ecosystem.

We wish Ian luck on the bold, uncharted journey ahead!

And, in related news, The Uncharted Journalism Fund is now accepting applications for its third grant to encourage adventurous journalism initiatives in or about British Columbia. The deadline to submit an application is September 11th.
