Our last grant submission deadline closed on Sept. 11th with less than a dozen applications for the $3,000 grant. While the trustees have yet to review the submissions, we think this is too few to confidently make a selection from. So, we’re reopening the grant submission period for another three weeks — and increasing the size of the grant to a maximum of $5,000.

Applications are open now, and the new deadline is midnight on Friday, November 10th.

Apply online.

Those who already applied for the Sept. 11th deadline will automatically be included in this new submission period — no need to re-submit your application.

We anticipate selecting one project to receive the entire $5,000 grant, though it’s possible two projects could split the amount.

As inspiration for your application, let us reflect on the past two grant recipients:

  • Ian Hinkle proposed working with a team of seasoned photographers and videographers on the roughest marine conditions that hit the south coast of British Columbia, to capture accurate representations the Salish Sea when the storms kick up. Because of the Uncharted Grant, his team is on the water capturing images mainstream media outlets often don’t have the time and resources to get. The team is then going to offer the images to media to better illustrate all conditions in the sea that could soon be carrying more oil tankers.
  • Emily McCarty’s video documentary will explore the lives of gender non-conforming youth in the Yukon to show the challenges facing such a group in isolated rural communities.

Successful applicants could be traditional reporters with an important scoop but without the resources to pursue it. The grant could be used to pay for all or part of a larger investigation, from offsetting costs or learning new skills to paying for travel to remote regions. Successful applicants could also be those with innovative ideas for the publishing or distribution of written stories, video or audio, data analysis and visualizations, and so on.

Apply online. Before doing so, review these Frequently Asked Questions.

We look forward to your submissions by midnight on Friday, November 10th. And, in the meantime, please help us spread the word by sharing this with your networks.

The Uncharted Journalism Fund: Chet Woodside, Phillip Smith, Alex Samur, Giselle Portenier, Erin Millar, Mark Hamilton, John Gray, Geoff D’Auria, and David Beers as well as Stuart Sutton-Jones and Mary Lynn Young.
