Congratulations on Ditching Your Resolution After a Month; Now What?
It doesn’t seem a big deal until it turns into a disaster.
Yeah, congratulations! How far did you go forcing yourself to wake up early? How many goals have you accomplished out of your to-do list until now?
Here’s mine. I did not make any resolutions this year; neither did I wake up early, join a gym, or get any journal, Planner or Sticky notes.
New Year felt like just another day. I didn’t follow any influencer’s advice blindly, who were emphasising insanely on making resolutions without explaining whether you needed it. Nor did I follow other influencers who were against making resolutions every time its New Year.
There has to be a crazy crowd fighting for and against the game.
The problem isn’t us making or not making resolutions. The problem is us believing and pursuing what other people believe and serve for their own benefit.
I used to be an insane fan of making resolutions and buying stuff to plan my day and set myself for on-productivity mode. But every time I failed, I had this one thought: why do I do this when I am not determined to do such things?
Resolutions are not about setting goals on air and making yourself busy for the namesake. It is the major cause you fail in your resolution.
Work on Determination
It might piss you off if I say goals are another fancy and hyped term nowadays.
“The path to success is to take massive, determined action.” — Tony Robbins.
We people have made it a compulsory component of life as salt — That goal has to be the chief motive behind doing something; either it should be for self-satisfaction, materialistic achievement, or something else.
But nobody has ever uttered whether you have the determination to work for your goals. Whether you’re determined to sacrifice short-term pleasures and be disciplined to work every day on them. Whether you’re ready to let go of gratification and work on what it takes to achieve.
Does this question appear as exactly it is when you think about making resolutions? If not, there’s no point in even pondering over it. Because it reflects if you’re not determined, you’ll not hold it for too long.
Are You Prepared for it Mentally And Physically?
The goals I used to set was solely based on what’s famous among the people.
For instance, waking up early, doing exercise, and eating healthy are the most popular resolutions people prefer. These resolutions take a long time to achieve and get desired results.
However, people think it’s just a matter of a second to make themselves ready mentally and physically to wake up early tomorrow, exercise, and lose calories.
What you did until today determines strongly what you’ll do tomorrow.
If you were partying, procrastinating, playing in pubs, and suddenly, this thought bursts into your mind that you were doing all wrong and resolving to change from tomorrow. Then it can’t be funnier.
To achieve any goals or win over resolution, you must prepare yourself physically and mentally. That doesn’t happen in a day.
Focus on What’s in Your Sphere of Control
What is the first and last thing you do in the morning and at night?
What do your daily to-dos comprise?
Do you focus more on the things that are in your sphere of control?
I wake up at around 10 am on off days, 7 am when I have physical classes, and 9 am when it’s online classes.
Apart from that, I don’t do any exercise except for an evening-long walk. My day plan includes reading, writing, attending classes, binging videos on YouTube, listening to songs and consuming content from elsewhere. That’s it.
All those things are my everyday to-do and in my sphere of control. So I focus more on them to achieve my goals. My goals are unsurprisingly straightforward, and it might appear as it isn’t the hardest thing to do.
You may think goals are extraordinary; That it takes extraordinary actions to achieve something splendid. But it isn’t. The more you simplify your path in a less bothered way, the easier and more achievable it appears.
Final Words
Social influencers suggest resolutions like going to the gym, exercising more, doing your hobby, following passions, journaling, reading more and so on.
One of the major mistakes we make while setting resolutions is we fantasize about fancy things. We cover the reality. We think we need to do extraordinary things to achieve extraordinary results.
Resolutions don’t need to be a little complicated by adding stuff that;
- You aren’t determined enough to work on.
- You’re not ready for it physically and mentally.
- Aren’t in your sphere of control.
These factors are crucial to determine whether you’re ready to play resolution or not.
