Weekend Recommendations (7/19/19)
Solutions to get you through a hot weekend
It’s a scorching hot weekend of triple digit temperatures in College Park and along the east coast, leaving you with a few options. Going to the beach? Good option. Going to a pool? Another good option. I don’t have a beach house nor access to a pool so i’ll be spending a lot of my weekend in the air conditioning. If you’re doing the same, or if you’ll be at the beach or a pool, check out these recommendations.
TV
Eight minutes apart on Friday afternoon I got these two notifications. Two of my favorite programs that Netflix produces — Queer Eye and Last Chance U — are both returning for their fourth season. There are incredibly different shows, one focusing on five gay men helping straight men improve their life and another focusing on a junior college football team. It’s a big weekend for Bible Belt states, Queer Eye and LCU are shot in Missouri and Kansas, respectively.
I could write a whole blog about the value of watching Queer Eye (and maybe I will), but the show is so positive and wholesome. LCU is an amazing show too, but a bit more aggressive and action-packed. Both are must-watches.
Podcast
If you’ve been active on Twitter for the past few months, you’ve probably noticed OJ Simpson’s presence on the app. The former NFL running back and should’ve-been-convicted murderer has been making light-hearted videos on the app to connect with his “fans.” It can be easy to forget just how sinister Simpson’s alleged actions in 1994 were, but this podcast makes sure that you don’t have to forget.
“Confronting OJ Simpson” is a podcasted hosted by Kim Goldman, the sister of Ron Goldman, who was murdered alongside Nicole Brown-Simpson on that infamous night in 1994. The podcast is really fascinating, you hear this new prospective on the case and listen to someone work through years and years of pain.
We have heard so much media coverage about OJ and Nicole through TV shows and documentaries, but it is important to remember that there was another victim as well, and this podcast brings that to light. She interviews lawyers, jurors, friends, and family to get some closure about the case.
Here’s the introduction episode and here’s episode one.
Music
This one applies more so to our audience who will be spending the weekend outside at a pool, beach, or wherever. I’ve had my car here recently and the lack of aux cord means I only have two options for music — CD’s and radio. Since I hate commercials and am getting sick of hearing top 40 music, I really only have one option. Like, really only one option because I only have one CD. My brother made a “best of” disk for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and I have been playing that thing on repeat on repeat.
The RHCP are a perfect summertime band. I always think of the line from Ben Wyatt in Parks and Recreation where he describes the topic areas the band covers as “everything form the culture of Southern California to drug use in Southern California.”
