A couple weeks ago, I got to conduct one of my favorite interviews to date with one of the cofounders of Invisible Hands, a nonprofit that coordinates socially distant grocery deliveries to NY and NJ’s residents who are elderly, immunocompromised, or have disabilities.

This service has had an unexpected positive result: matching those often missing social connection the most with generous volunteers seeking to contribute during this pandemic. You can read the full story here.

It’s worth noting that I learned about Invisible Hands listening to an episode of one of my favorite podcasts, My Favorite Murder. Recently, the hosts have traded in sharing listeners’ hometown stories that sparked their true crime fascinations for their heartwarming stories during the COVID-19 crisis.

With that in mind, I want to introduce a new segment to these announcement emails —

I Didn’t Make This, But It’s Helping Me Stay Sane

Our Plague Year has quickly become one of my other favorite podcasts. Brought to life by one of the co-creators of Welcome to Night Vale, it’s a chronicle of lived experience through the dizzying chaos of the pandemic. I have severe anxiety and have listened to every episode at least twice. Hearing honest, raw moments from other people’s lives has helped me feel less alone.

Part short-form performative essay, part listener voicemail, creator and host Joseph Fink is making something strange and wonderful that neither sugar coats nor fearmongers. Instead, it documents this bizarre time in ~20 minute increments, recording the year we survived — together.

You can listen to Our Plague Year on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast app. Photo via Night Vale Presents.

Thank you so much for reading. Stay safe, and take care.
