PUP-COC Lights Academic Opportunities through Ceremonial MOU Signing with UAY

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) formalized its partnership with Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta (UAY), through the College of Communication (COC), the Open University System, and the PUP Graduate School, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was broadcasted last Saturday, April 9, via Zoom and Facebook Live.

According to the MOU, both PUP and UAY agreed to form and develop a cultural and educational collaborative understanding through the following:

· Joint research collaboration and/or research-related activities;

· Programs of exchange of their respective faculty members and students for instructional research and cultural purposes;

· Exploration of potential co-sponsorships of international conferences and academic exchanges in areas of joint interests;

· Exchange of educational materials, research publications, and instructional information.

Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta, previously named ‘Stmik Amikom Yogyakarta’, is one of the largest and most respected private universities in Indonesia and has enrolled more than 12,000 active students; it is committed to excellence in scholarship, research, and service. The university’s motto, “creative economy park,” brings opportunities to its students and alumni alike to intern and work in Silicon Valley and Hollywood.

As the Dean of PUP-COC Dr. Hemmady Mora gave her opening remarks during the event, she highlighted that the springboard for the collaboration was the need of educational training between both universities, specifically in animation and broadcasting for the students of PUP-COC, and studies on research for the faculty of UAY.

“An established relationship, friendship, and togetherness,” described Chairperson of the Department of Communication Research (DCR) Dr. Rudolf Anthony Lacerna of its partnership with Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta. With much enthusiasm, Dr. Lacerna narrated on the fruitful journey of collaborative opportunities in the field of communication as envisioned between both universities.

A push towards internationalization is among the goals of the partnership with UAY, which could prove to be beneficial to the PUP community to gear its students towards global- competitiveness. “The collaboration will further harness the different programs in faculty development, extension and research program, and engagement of both universities for the benefit of the academic community as well as the society in general.” Dr. Manuel Muhi said.

Furthermore, Dr. Muhi also asserted that together with Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, both universities would continue to extend mutual support in bringing quality and accessible higher learning among all corresponding learners.

Prof. Dr. M. Suyatano M.M, the Rector of UAY, and Dr. Arief Setyanto, S.Si, MT, Ph.D., Vice Rector of UAY for Research and Development, were hopeful and optimistic that the partnership would bring both universities to greater heights in facing international challenges that would be of value to wider communities outside their academic reach.

In the release of their respective signatures on the MOU, it was with great gratitude that Dr. Muhi, Dr. Gapasin, Dr. Mora, Dr. Lacerna, Assistant Professor Fajardo, Chairperson of the Department of Broadcasting (PUP), Dr. Suyanto, Dean of the Faculty of Economics, and Social from UAY Dr. Setyanto Luthfi formally certified the collaborative undertaking of the universities.

The event ended with a closing remark from Asst. Prof. Fajardo where he pointed out that born of numerous research joint activities from the agreement would be new synergies and added academic value for both universities. The virtual event was hosted by Prof. Emmanuel Santos and was organized by the official publication arm of the DCR, UNDERSCORE PUP–DCR.
