After a three-year break from in-person gatherings due to the pandemic, the PUP Circle of Research Enthusiasts (CORE) successfully hosted the Department of Communication Research’s face-to-face general assembly titled “CommReSARI-SARI: Seizing The Various Opportunities of Communication Research” on October 23, 2023, at the COC Audio Visual Room.

The general assembly officially commenced with an opening remark from Mr. Jeffrey Ancheta, the chairperson of the department, in which he underscored the event’s importance in enlightening the students about Communication Research.

Charting the Path in CommRes

Associate Professor Kriztine Rosales-Viray, an expert in research, communication, theater, and film at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, took the stage to kickstart the discussion of the program’s overview. She highlighted the program’s versatility and the essential role communication researchers play in sustaining research across various disciplines, specifying the field’s adaptability and the potential paths for graduates.

“I can apply wherever I want, because people need me in their specific fields. No field can survive without communication researchers. Research is everywhere.” Viray stated.

Furthermore, Viray presented the newly adapted curriculum by showcasing the different subjects offered per year level. The advancement of the overall program was evident as the courses of the current curriculum are less in number but more condensed compared to the previous one.

DCR’s Agents of Progress

During the event’s second segment, PUP CORE and UNDERSCORE PUP-DCR, the official student publication arm of the department emphasized the significant responsibilities carried by their respective organizations and members in maintaining the department’s core values.

Jemima Laurenciano, President of PUP CORE, initiated her speech with a comprehensive presentation that outlined the tasks and responsibilities performed by the organization to support the DCR Community. She referenced past events spearheaded by the organization that aimed to promote the importance of research in society, such as “Empowering Diversability — Disability-Inclusive Future through Research,” “Inquirer’s Utopia,” and “ABMYMSSLTPTLG Ako!: An Exploration of Cultural Studies and Historical Research.”

To conclude her talk, Laurenciano encouraged the participants to join PUP CORE, showing the organization’s welcoming stance toward potential new members.

Concurrently, Gabrielle Montiel, Editor-in-Chief of UNDERSCORE PUP-DCR provided an introduction of the organization, shedding light on its vision, objectives, and contributions in upholding the department’s mission.

“We at UNDERSCORE are committed to building a data-driven and solutions-oriented society. We are always reminded kung para kanino nga ba kami nagsusulat at iyon ay para sa masa. Para tulungan ang masa na maging kritikal at progresibo when it comes to decision-making. With that, we can help in fighting the rapid spread of fake news and misinformation in our country,” Montiel expressed.
