PUP-DCR Empowers Sustainable Development Goals through SALIKSIKAN 2024 Research Colloquium

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Department of Communication Research (DCR) successfully inaugurated an academic conference about the promotion of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in. research papers, entitled “SALIKSIKAN 2024: A DCR Student Research Colloquium” which initiated in collaboration of DCR’s premiere academic organizations, PUP Circle of Research Enthusiasts (PUP CORE), and the official publication arm of the department, UNDERSCORE PUP-DCR. The event was held on June 14, 2024 through a face-to-face session at the PUP College of Communication (COC) audio-visual room (AVR).

The dean of PUP-COC, Dr. Hemmedy S. Mora, delivered her opening remarks and congratulatory message for the event. She reflected on the journey of the participants, from their enrollment in Communication Research (CommRes) to their upcoming graduation.

Dr. Mora highlighted the significance of CommRes in her speech, noting its growing demand and opportunities. She stated Your course is one of the most important courses in our country,” emphasizing the needs of research in all fields. She concluded with the note “Research speaks for you,” which annotated that everything needs to be backed up by research, and that research speaks for all of us.

PUP CORE President, Ms. Jemima Laurenciano, delivered the background and the objectives of the event, explaining that it was inspired by the recent research defense presentations of 4th year DCR students. The event also aims to share the students’ research papers with a larger audience and to promote SDGs. She noted that “Saliksikan” means searching and research, and the event was designed as a platform for students to present their findings and share understanding of how communication research can contribute to building a sustainable future.

Voices for Sustainable Futures

The project head of SALIKSIKAN 2024, Ms. Petrona Bea Sevilla, then introduced the plenary speaker for the event’s morning session. The director of the PUP Research Publication Office, Dr. Jose Reuben Q. Alagaran II, began his talk on strengthening and empowering SDGs through CommRes.

Dr. Alagaran continued to underscore the role of both communication and research in making SDGs a more feasible future. He stated that We have the responsibility to ensure a sustainable future.” Highlighting not only the role of students as the hope of the nation’s future, but also how they can contribute to society as communication researchers.

Concluding his talk, Dr. Alagaran was then awarded his certificate of recognition by Asst. Prof. Jeffrey Ancheta and Dr. Jim Duran, together with SALIKSIKAN’s project head and PUP CORE President Ms. Bea Sevilla and Ms. Jemima Laurenciano. It was then followed by the presentation proper of 4th year DCR students, showcasing their research papers aligned with specific SDGs.

Scholarly Spotlights: Student Paper Presentation

The event was divided into three parallels, wherein twenty six groups of 4th year DCR students presented their research papers in the morning and afternoon sessions.

The morning session consists of six SDGs research papers. In parallel A, held in room 209, the presentation is categorized under SDG 3: Good Health and Well being. While, parallel B in room 210, consists of three SDG topics, which is under the SDG 5: Gender Equality, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 14: Life Below Water. Lastly, parallel C held in AVR, the retaining presentations were under the SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. The following research presentation was evaluated:

Furthermore, the morning session of the event concluded with an open forum, where attendees from each parallel had the opportunity to ask questions and share their concerns regarding the papers presented. The session ends with the awarding of certificates to all participants, recognizing their participation in the event.

After a short lunch break, the event continued with the introduction of the plenary speaker for the afternoon session. The co-project head of SALIKSIKAN 2024, Ms. Althea Belle Agustin, introduced UP Diliman Associate Professor, Dr. Jonalou SJ. Labor, who began his talk about the interrelationship of the SDGs and the field of Communication Research.

Dr. Labor then emphasized the significance of CommRes in understanding the public perception and evaluating sustainable practices and strategies. He explained that research is essential in any field and that includes reaching the Philippines’ ambition with the SDGs. He statedYour research skills are a potent weapon in the fight for a sustainable future,” underscoring how crucial research and communication is in bridging the knowledge gaps and making valuable information accessible to the masses.

Following the talk of Dr. Labor, designated 4th year DCR students for the afternoon session presented their respective papers.

The afternoon session consisted of research papers aligned with 5 more SDGs. In parallel D, held in room 209, the studies presented were categorized under SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. While in parallel E, held in room 210, the papers presented were aligned with SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. Lastly in parallel F, held in the audio-visual room, the presentations consisted of studies pertaining to SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions. The overall research papers showcased throughout the afternoon session are as follows:

The open forum for the afternoon session initiated after the presentations of the studies, giving the audience an opportunity to ask questions and make clarifications related to the papers shown. The awarding of certificates for those who presented their research then followed after. Marking the closure of the event, the adviser of PUP CORE, Assoc. Prof. Kriztine R. Viray, gave her closing remarks speech, highlighting the overall success of SALIKSIKAN 2024. Her closing remarks were then followed by the singing of the PUP Hymn.
