In collaboration with the department’s premiere academic organizations, PUP Circle of Research Enthusiasts, and UNDERSCORE PUP-DCR, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Department of Communication Research (DCR), launched its first-ever publication workshop entitled “LIMBAGAN: A Research Publication Workshop on Communication and Media Studies.” The event was executed on December 6, 2023, through a face-to-face session at the PUP College of Communication (COC) audio-visual room.

In the opening ceremony, Dr. Hemmady S. Mora, dean of PUP-COC, commenced her opening remarks and appreciation message that held significance for the participants of the event. She expressed hope towards having this kind of program in the future, especially in the academic year 2024.

The Project Head of LIMBAGAN 2023, DCR Chairperson and Asst. Prof. Jeffrey R. Ancheta, delivered his opening speech noting that the objective of the event was to make the paper of the students be published in PUP-COC e-journal Talastasan: A Philippine Journal of Communication and Media Studies.

Through the Lens of Media and Communication

The program formally started with a talk spearheaded by Dr. Glenn Irwin Reynon, the Program Chair of the Communication Department of UST Angelicum College. He talked about research with the sense of creativity as an introduction for his workshop entitled: “Si Marites at ang kanyang Pagbubuntis: Student Research Workshop on Communication and Media.”

Dr. Reynon deliberated the Communication Research students as he commenced the talk by sharing some techniques and practices on systematically arranging or crafting a research paper.

In question, Bakit si Marites? [Why Marites?] Why do people fond gossip? As people are wired to seek information and when hearing certain information, it boosts their attention to seek more details that may vary from individual interests.

“We are Marites, literally and figuratively,” he added as he emphasized people’s desire to gather information.

According to the speaker, research is what bridges the gaps in knowledge and students shall aim to make a significant contribution to society, not merely as a submission of an academic requirement for scholarly gratification. He also expressed that information is everywhere. Eliminating facts evidently make people unwise.

Dr. Reynon imparted such valuable ideas and new ways in making a research study, hence, in publication in the modern-day society, researchers are the future source by amplifying the capabilities in the lens of media and communication.

Scrutinizing New Concepts

The event was divided into two sessions, where six groups of fourth year BACR students presented their research papers.

In the first session, panel of evaluators from the Communication Department of UST Angelicum College, Dr. Glen Irwin Reynon and DCR professor Dr. Jim Duran, together with the head of Talastasan Research Journal of PUP-COC, Asst. Prof. George Vincent Gamayo, evaluated two research papers:

1. Huwag Mo Akong Salingin: The Reception of Filipino Viewers on GMA network’s Maria Clara at Ibarra

2. A Study on the Perception of Nueva Ecija Rice Farmers on the Role of LGU Regarding the Rice Importation

Furthermore, the second session was composed of the same panellists, wherein four research papers were presented. The said evaluators, monitored and evaluated the following research papers:

1. Experiences of Penitents in San Pedro Cutud, San Fernando, Pampanga on their Practice of Flagellation and Crucifixion: A Qualitative Study of Religious Devotion

2. Sikat o Makapal ang Balat? Cancel Culture as a Marketing Strategy

3. The Influence of Political Propaganda on Facebook Users’ Perception of the Image of ABS-CBN

4. A Male-dominated Industry: The Perception of Male Cockfighters to Women Engaging in Cockfighting in San Pedro, Laguna

To conclude the sessions, the panelists provided strong recommendations and suggestions to enhance the research papers of the participants.

Equipping Media and Communication Studies

The event wrapped up through the insightful lessons and recommendations shared by the panelists and the students’ enthusiastic engagement during the talk proper of the workshop.

In his closing remarks, Asst. Prof. George Vincent Gamayo expressed that people have an exchange of intellectual and creative minds whenever they are in classrooms and events like this, significantly, it enables them to think rationally and critically, as he always articulates to his students.

“Bilang mga mananaliksik, at bilang mga susunod na alagad ng midya, bilang mga susunod na social researchers, lagi nating tatandaan: na ang mga malalalim, ating pababawin, sa paraan na yayakapin ito at mauunawaan ng mga taong hindi hindi nakakaunawa nito.” Asst. Prof. Gamayo stated.

[As the future researchers, media practitioners, and upcoming social researchers, let us always remember that the deep ones, we shall simplify the complicated concepts in a manner that can be embraced and understood by those who lack the knowledge.]

Following his assertion, he emphasized that researchers are unique and being skilled in this field is a step closer to developing education and a better PUP-COC.

“Baliw na baliw tayo sa research at okay lang na maging baliw! (sa research).” Asst. Prof. Gamayo said.

[We are crazy about research and it’s okay to be crazy! (in research)]

Asst. Prof. Gamayo acknowledged the students for being the reason for a better world. He sought to harness and nurture students’ skill, and passions, aiming to enhance and cultivate that quality and embrace it.
