Following the success of the first extension program in November 2021, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Department of Communication Research (DCR), partnered with Cupang National High School (CNHS), held the second phase of the extension program titled "Research 101: Research Training for High School Teachers of Cupang National High School.” Originally scheduled to execute in January to December 2022, the event finally commenced on November 18, 2023, through a face-to-face session at the PUP College of Communication’s (COC) Audio Visual Room.

After the four-week training program from November to December 2021, the CNHS teachers presented their research proposals and received research mentoring from PUP-COC faculty members.

Showing Results of the First Extension Program

The partnership between PUP-DCR and CNHS, headed by CNHS Principal Dr. Ma. Celina F. Cezar and former DCR Chairperson Dr. Rudolf Anthony A. Lacerna started to increase the research projects at CNHS in accordance with the Department of Education's (DepEd) Order No. 16 Series of 2017 to strengthen the research culture in basic education.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Cezar noted that CNHS improvement programs transformed into research following the four-week research training. Furthermore, she disclosed that before the partnership project, research initiatives had yet to be established. But, after the first phase of Research 101, teachers started to volunteer their time to develop research projects, and as of the previous academic year, CNHS has produced 14 research outputs.

Dr. Lacerna mentioned that the end goal of the partnership is the research publication of the said topics. Similarly, PUP-COC's Dean, Dr. Hemmady S. Mora, expressed hope towards the same goal and put weight on the relevance of research in today's society.

Examining New Ideas

The event proper was divided into two sessions, where eight groups of CNHS teachers presented their proposals.

In the first session, panelists from DCR Asst. Prof. Jeffrey R. Ancheta and Dr. Rudolf Anthony A. Lacerna, together with Assoc. Prof. Renalyn J. Valdez from Department of Journalism (DOJ), evaluated four research proposals:

  1. Programang Interbensyon: Basehan sa Pagbasa na may Pang-unawa sa Baitang 7 sa Mataas na Paaralan ng Cupang sa Taong 2023-2024.
  2. Development and Validation of Digitized Video Lessons in Physical Education for the Improvement of Academic Performance of Grade 9 Learners.
  3. Time Management Skills of Learners in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao during the New Normal Education.
  4. Status and Culture of Research in Cupang National High School: Basis for a Propose Technical Assistance Program.

On the other hand, the second session was composed of panelists Dr. Debbie Jim C. Duran, Assoc. Prof. Kriztine R. Viray, Dr. Reylan Viray from DCR, Dr. Hemmady S. Mora from DOJ, and Dr. Edna T. Bernabe from the Department of Broadcast Communication. They monitored the following four research proposals:

  1. Effectiveness of Study Habits of Grade 9 Learners to the Academic Performance in Araling Panlipunan S.Y. 2023-2024.
  2. Assessment on the Responses made for Modular Distance Teaching and Learning of Cupang National High School in Times of Pandemic: Basis for an Innovative Development Plan.
  3. Socio-Economic Profile of Learners-At-Risk of Dropping-Out in Cupang National High School: Basis for Development of an Intervention Program.
  4. Time Management of Cupang National High School Teachers: Basis for Technical Assistance.

The panel, composed of faculty members from PUP-COC, provided recommendations and suggestions to enhance the research proposals of CNHS teachers.

Expressing Hope for the Future

In her closing remarks, Dr. Edna T. Bernabe, the Extension Management Coordinator of COC, expressed her gratitude to Dr. Lacerna and Asst. Prof. Ancheta for establishing and sustaining the initiative for research extension program. She also thanked the panel of evaluators for their dedication to the project, who will also be collaborating with the CNHS teachers until they meet the end goal of research publication.

"Walang bibitaw, sana matapos ito, at matuloy ang Phase 3 ng Research 101," Dr. Bernabe noted.
[No one should stop. Hopefully, we can finish the extension program and continue the Phase 3 of Research 101.]

Prior to the program's conclusion, the mentors from PUP-COC and the CNHS teachers pledged to keep working together to complete the proposed studies and, eventually, publish the research papers.
