PUP’s Department of Communication Research Launches ‘LINANGAN’ Student Qualitative Workshop; Fostering Growth and Development in Communication and Media Studies

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Department of Communication Research (DCR) successfully launched the student qualitative research workshop entitled “LINANGAN: A Student Qualitative Workshop on Communication and Media Studies.” The event was spearheaded by DCR in collaboration with its foremost academic organizations, PUP Circle of Research Enthusiasts (CORE), and UNDERSCORE PUP-DCR. The program was conducted on February 29, 2024, through an online Zoom Meeting.

Dr. Hemmady S. Mora, dean of PUP College of Communication, inaugurated the event with her opening remarks and appreciation message that held significance for the participants of the event. She highlighted that the workshop provides a training ground to equip the students with valuable skills and experience that are aligned to their academic pursuit that can help their future careers and personal lives. Rooting for the participants’ paper development, especially in the future workshop “LIMBAGAN” 2024.

PUP CORE President, Ms. Jemima Laurenciana, delivered the background and objective of the event, and that the workshop was designed for students to serve as an avenue to present their research proposal and get substantial review and recommendation from the panel of critics. She noted that “it is more than just a gathering, but it is a platform for growth.” Expecting the participants to produce a qualitative research proposal for the “LIMBAGAN” 2024 for refinement of the publication.

Research in Multidisciplinary View

The program formally commenced with a lecture by Dr. Baby Jean VC. Jose, from the Central Luzon State University, College of Arts and Social Sciences. She talked about her research workshop which tackles a multidisciplinary view of research entitled: “KWALI Sa Maka-Pilipinong Lapit: Mga Danas ng Hapdi at Sakit ng Pananaliksik.”

Dr. Jose initiated her discussion about research in a multidisciplinary view. She asserted that research is a process of finding and providing new knowledge. The speaker then proceeds by questioning random 2nd year DCR students about qualitative research.

Moreover, Dr. Jose imparted her knowledge and mastery of research in different views by catering to questions asked by the students during the open forum moderated by Ms. Janzen Alaine Magsombol and Mr. Mark Alfaro. The research workshop ended with active participation followed by awarding of certificate of appreciation.

Amplifying Insights for Crafting Research Paper

The event was divided into three panels where twenty one groups of 2nd year DCR students presented their research proposals.

The panel of critics evaluated a total of 9 research proposals in the AM session. The first panel, “New Media, Culture and Gender,” was supervised by Dr. Baby Jean VC. Jose from Central Luzon State University. The second panel, “Media Studies,” was under Mr. Christopher Bryan A. Concha from De La Salle University. Finally, the last panel, “Communication Studies,” was handled by Mr. Renz Kevin M. Alcazar from Cavite State University. The following proposals were evaluated:

New Media, Culture and Gender

  1. Analysis of Non-verbal Communication and Expression within Filipino Youth Subcultures: Jologs, Jejemon, Hypebeast, and Estetik
  2. Our Father in Drag Mother: Black Nazarene Devotees’ Reception on Pura Luka Vega’s Drag Performance
  3. Understanding the Usage of Honorifics among Polytechnic University of the Philippines — College of Communication Students

Media Studies

  1. Querida: Exploring the Archetypes of Mistresses in Selected Filipino Film
  2. Analyzing People’s Perceptions on how they Rate Television Shows in MTRCB Rating Standards
  3. Exploring the Representation of Filipino Families in Selected Local Mainstream Film
  4. A Semiotic Analysis on How Skin Whitening Companies Exploit Filipino Beauty Ideals on Facebook

Communication Studies

  1. The Filipino Psyche of Victimhood Mentality: Unveiling Social and Communicational Impact and its Enduring Consequences to People
  2. Exploring Caregivers’ Communication Strategies and Techniques in Home for the Elderly Facilities in Quezon City

Furthermore, the second batch of DCR students presented their remaining proposals in the PM session. The evaluators, composed of the same panelists, criticized and evaluated the following research proposals:

  1. Peer or Fear: The Persistence of Borderline-Hazing Initiation Rites in Philippine Collegiate Organizations
  2. “An In-depth Analysis: Exploring the Concept of ‘Pamilya’ Through the Eyes of Foundlings”
  3. Swipe Right, Signal Left: Exploring the Perspectives of Individuals who give “Mixed Signals” in their Relationships
  4. Analyzing the Diverse Behavioral Communication of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Players

Media Studies

  1. You are my Comfort, Skyfam: Analyzing Audience Perception and Engagement Dynamics in Kryz Uy’s Content Comments Sections
  2. The Reception of Men Towards the Barbie Movie
  3. Bakla, Bakla, Nasa TV Ka: Reflection Of Authentic LGBT Stories Through Representation On Mainstream Filipino Television

Communication Studies

  1. Disability Inclusion: Analyzing the Communication Styles of Special Education Students and Teachers in Marilao, Bulacan

  3. Silent Treatment: Its Effect on Communication Process
  4. Understanding the Stability and Communication Patterns of a Long-Distance Relationship
  5. Conflict Resolution in Intercultural Marriages: A Qualitative Study of Relational Challenges and Coping Strategies

To conclude the sessions, the panelists provided their views, recommendations, and suggestions to enhance the research papers of the participants.

Fostering Research Integrity

In his closing remarks, Asst. Prof. Jeffrey R. Ancheta, Chairperson of DCR, expressed his gratitude towards every participant for their active participation, insightful contributions, and commitment towards the advancement of their skills which resounds the research workshop with success. He also stated that as the event comes to an end, it is also important to reflect upon new learnings and experiences which they dedicated themselves to.

Following his remarks, he emphasized to all participants that it is important to promote the highest standard and integrity of research knowing that they are Communication Research students..

“Wala akong pag-aalinlangan na ang mga natutuhan ninyo at mga nakuhang koneksyon sa workshop na ito ay mag sisilbing asset ninyo habang pinagpapatuloy ninyo ang inyong pag-aaral, at madadala ninyo hanggang sa maging propesyonal na kayo sa hinaharap.”

[“I have no doubt that what you have learned and the connections you have made in this workshop will serve as assets for you as you continue your studies, and you will carry them with you until you become professionals in the future.”]

Asst. Prof. Ancheta acknowledged the students and moderators who contributed to the successful event. He sought for an innovative and fruitful outcome for their research through their hard work. Before ending his remarks, he reiterated that he will be waiting for them for the upcoming LIMBAGAN 2024.
