Subsequent to her recent appointment as Director of the Communication Management Office, Prof. Krupskaya Valila officially resigned Tuesday — November 3, 2020 as head of the Department of Communication Research.

In an interview with UNDERSCORE PUP-DCR, Valila shares her excitement for her new role which covers the media relation services of PUP as it gives her an opportunity even at a young age to lead and carry out change in the university to better serve its stakeholders.

When asked about who will be replacing her as department chair, Valila says nothing has been finalized so far, and that Dr. Divina T. Pasumbal, being the College Dean, will concurrently take charge of the department for the time being.

“Before I left the Department, the Dean and I had been talking to different faculty members asking them if they could serve as the chairperson of CommRes but as of the moment wala pang [final na] napag-uusapan.”

Valila’s resignation as chairperson comes a month short before her first year since assuming the position just in December of 2019. She recalls challenges in imposing progress to the department because of some unforeseen circumstances such as her premature exit and the advent of global pandemic.

“Even before the pandemic, the department is already facing a lot of challenges and problems firstly from the insufficient number of fulltime faculty members, and streamlining curriculum. So nung kinailangan nating mag-adopt sa now normal we really had to adjust and I’m really grateful naman sa lahat ng part-time faculty members na tumulong na kahit part-time faculty members sila ay they really lent a hand and naging malaking asset sila sa department.” Valila also mentioned the increasing number of students who are suffering from mental health problems under the now normal mode of learning, in addition lauded CORE and the presidents of each class for initiating programs and projects to help these students.

Given the recent events in the department, Valila tells worried CommRes students “Do not fear”, as she assures that Dean Pasumbal will be there to assist with students’ concerns, and that the College is already searching for new department head.

“Do not fear [kase] bilang chairperson, my projects and programs.. my being active is always in line and in constant consultation with the dean. Ibig sabihin kung gaano ako ka-focus mas doble din ang ginagawa ng ating dekana, so I believe the dean would always do her best to make sure that all processes and services will be maintained even though you don’t have chairperson as of the moment and ginagawan na ‘yan ng paraan so that the soonest ay magkakaroon na ng bagong chairperson.”

The resigned chairperson also leaves as organization adviser of the official student publication arm of Department of Communication Research, UNDERSCORE PUP-DCR; and the premiere academic org of the department, CORE or (Circle of Research Enthusiasts).

For Valila, while it is unfortunate that she had to leave the department she is also looking forward to still contribute as member of its faculty.
