The Polytechnic University of the Philippines–College of Communication, in partnership with Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta, conducted its first training session of the International Communication Research Extension program, tagged “Write it Right in Communication Research,” via Zoom last June 25.

“If you have a claim, you have to have evidence. Because any research undertaking is about seeking for the truth and the only way you will be able to seek for the truth is by generating new sets of ideas and information.” Dr. Algaran highlighted the importance of evidence in conducting research during his talk.

With the topic “Synergy of Research and Communication Theories and Models,” guest speaker Dr. Jose Reuben G. Alagaran II, associate professor from the Department of Journalism (PUP-COC), discussed communication research and emphasized the difference between quantitative and qualitative research. Dr. Alagaran also went through the necessity of studying communication theory and how to connect a respective theory to one’s research output. To wrap off the discussion, Dr. Alagaran explained the step-by-step process involved in conducting practical research works and highlighted that the purpose of any research undertaking is to discover the truth by providing evidence to support it.

The two-hour training session sought to understand how ‘Communication Research’ and ‘Communication Theories and Models’ are connected. In addition, participants were expected to comprehend the function of theories, not only in the research undertakings but also in solving practical problems.

In her opening speech, Dr. Hemmady Mora, dean of the PUP-COC, expressed her profound gratitude to the participants from UAY for their support and trust in the college. She also mentioned how the academe had remained firm as they continued to work towards achieving their goals in the middle of the health crisis.

“Today marks the start of the historic undertaking for the college of communication PUP for UAY because this international extension activity program and initiative is the first of its kind. Amidst the health crisis, the academe has remained steadfast and active; we did not allow the pandemic to hinder us from achieving our desired goals.” Dean Mora noted in her opening remarks.

Meanwhile, Professor Rivga Agusta, representative of the Communication Studies Department from Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta, hoped this program would pave the way for future international scientific collaboration.

Dr. Edna Bernabe moderated the event while Prof. Damiel Joseph Caasi for Broadcasting and Journalism, Prof. Marynelle Rosales for Culture and Media Studies, and Prof. Princess Esponilla for Advertising and Public Relations facilitated the event. It was attended by 32 participants from UAY and five officials of PUP, including the institution’s president, Dr. Manuel Muhi.
