Hey there! Well, it has been a whole few weeks since Figma release their plugins and my oh my how amazing of a ride it has been!

Every day since the launch, I’ve been visiting the plugin tab in Figma to see what’s new. Basically, Christmas every day. Looking forward to seeing if a new plugin will be gifted to us from the Figma community to help improve our workflow and craft!

A few pro-tips before we begin:

  1. Press CMD+/ and quickly type in the plugin to open it faster
  2. Press CMD+OPTION+P to reopen the previous plugin
  3. Share this article to be cool (ha! gotcha)

In this post, I want to quickly go through top 10 (in no particular order) of the most amazing, game-changing, plugins that have benefited us as Unfold already. Let’s go! 🚀

1) SkewDat — by Unfold

This has been one of the most requested features in Figma by our team… so we decided to build it 🤪 Read about it! The way it works is simple and intuitive; select an object, open the SkewDat plugin, adjust the skew you need LIVE and apply. What’s amazing about it, is that its non-destructive, so it will preserve the skew forever 😎.

2) Golden Line — by Yarik Bright

This plugin is SUPER simple but super handy. Ever have issues with adjusting your body text to the perfect line-height? Well, this plugin adjusts the line height to the golden ratio to any selected text box. Meaning it creates the most visually pleasing line height based on your text size. There are no modals or settings to adjust, just apply!

Change line height based on the Golden Ratio. Just select one or more text layers. The formula uses the width of the text layer, the font size, and the Golden Ratio: 1.6180.

3) Content Reel — By Microsoft

This is an essential plugin. If you remember the good ol’ Craft plugin by InVision back in the Sketch days, this is something similar. Note that it’s not yet fully developed but it’s already very functional! You add in real, dummy data that makes your design look genuine (email, names, location, etc). Avatars and icons coming soon…👀

4) Better Font Picker — By Nitin Gupta

Finally! A font previewer like we’re all used to from any software we’ve used in the past. This is another very requested feature from Figma users and now we have it. The way it works; you select a text block, open the plugin and start going through fonts, visually (it auto applies). No more 3rd party font previewers 🎉!

5) Time Machine — by Square

This is a great plugin. The way it works is you select a layer, group or frame and run the plug-in. Then it creates a new page of all your backups ordered by date. So you can quickly reference older iterations without having to go into Figma’s built-in version control.

Time Machine saves and organizes work that you want to look back on. You’ll no longer need to manually copy a version of what you’re working on to a new page to reference for later.

6) Unsplash — by Unsplash

Of course, this one might be obvious but this plugin has the most downloads for a reason! With a click of a button, search and drop in images from Unsplash (Free Photostock) onto the work area or into a specific object.

With Unsplash for Figma, you can insert a random image or search for something specific. The Unsplash License allows images to be used freely for both commercial and personal projects.

7) Notepad — by Dustin Mierau

This is a very useful little plugin that adds almost like a sticky note to your Figma file. This note is useful to put in important little tasks or reminders for the file as a whole (not generic pinpoint that Figma already offers). What’s neat is, anyone with this plugin will be able to access the note. Keep in mind it’s not LIVE SYNCED, so multiple people can’t edit it at the same time.

Jot down todos, ideas, research, meeting notes, and other bits of information relevant to your design work.

8) Iconify — by Vjacheslav Trushkin

This is a SUPER useful plugin for icons. It contains 10’s of thousands of icons, search from large icon libraries (material design, font awesome, entypo, etc). The need for a 3rd party software (like IconJar or similar) might soon become obsolete.

Import icons to Figma document as vector shapes.

9) Color Palettes — by Manthankumar Satani

This is great to quickly browse through color palettes right within Figma! Lots of great options to pick from, once selected it copies the layers and hex numbers onto your Figma file.

Find the best color palette from the huge list of best color palettes Fill beautiful color from “Color Palettes plugin” straight into your design.

9a) Palette — by Dustin Mierau

Another plugin for color palettes, both are strong in their own way. This one is great because you cycle through the colors and build your palette on the spot! It’s very smart and easy to use.

Color palettes are generated automatically using machine intelligence. You can click on colors to lock them in as you generate new colors. Also, you can drag colors to reorder them.

10) Blobs — by Dylan Feltus

This is such an amazing and simple little plugin that helps you create some trendy little blobs. You can adjust the complexity of it with simple sliders. It has been a time-saver 🙌.

Every shape that is generated is unique to the last. You can control how unique a shape is along with how many points it has.

Whew, that was fun!

Thanks for going through our top favorite plugins! I understand that there is a lot that I’ve missed that are super powerful, but this list is for those plugins that we’ve used most and have been bringing us value up to this moment.

What are you top 3 favorite plugins?
