As part of the Baseline Protocol, Unibright and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology IPK have set themselves the goal of developing an application in the field of manufacturing technology and jointly researching the potential of the open source project for companies. For this purpose, a demonstrator is developed, which will then be published jointly and used to acquire bilateral and publicly funded projects.

Fraunhofer IPK has been conducting applied research and development for the entire process chain of manufacturing companies since 1976 — from product development to the production process, the maintenance of capital goods and the recycling of products to the design and management of factory operations. In addition to contract research, innovative concepts for the production of tomorrow are also developed as part of preparatory projects. Innovations created in this way are converted into marketable products together with partners.

In the context of the Baseline protocol, Fraunhofer IPK joined the Baseline “Specifications Steering Committee” in May 2020 and decided to co-innovate with Baseline founding member Unibright as a main driver in terms of business integration with baselined processes.

A blockchain demonstrator for an additive manufacturing plant that is available at the Fraunhofer IPK and based on Hyperledger Fabric is to be adapted to the guidelines of the Baseline Protocol and expanded to include integration into SAP. The baseline demonstration will be developed by a project team made up of employees from Fraunhofer IPK and Unibright. Through their research activities the partners intend to exploit the potential of the Baseline Protocol for the manufacturing industry. In follow-up projects, common standards for the use of Baseline in Industry 4.0 and IoT are to be developed together with manufacturing companies.

The project has been added to the public development roadmap of the Baseline protocol and is projected for completion in Q4 2020.
