The concept of Virtual Reality has been around since the 90s’, though it hasn’t been until recently that it entranced the whole world. From entertainment and gaming, to healthcare and education, VR has managed to become a prominent fixture in every industry. And considering the rate at which VR is taking over, we seem to be on the cusp of a revolution that promises to turn our lives upside down. So, a question arises, in what ways can we tap this technology’s potential in order to contribute to making the world a better place?
And, it seems like there are more than a couple of people who have thought about ways to do the same. A number of organizations have taken up on VR’s promise to give us a surreal experience using fully immersive environments and used it to help improve the quality of life. An example is of the “Virtual Dream Project”, an organization that aims to give young oncology patients a break from reality with the help of VR. A way to put a smile on their faces and help them experience and explore the world. Similarly, “Embrace the Life VR” has designed a platform for wheelchair bound users to help them navigate in real time while providing a therapeutic effect that reduces anxiety and increases social integration.
Though at a very early stage, VR has already made significant development in the healthcare industry. It provides medical professionals a platform to perform risky surgeries without the actual “risk”. Not only can VR be used to help doctors, patients can benefit from it as well; VR helps to alleviate their pain and stress. Childhood Anxiety Reduction through Innovation and
Technology (CHARIOT), one of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital’s largest VR programs is an example of the same. It uses technologies like VR to lessen some of the stress and anxiety children undergo during surgeries and minor procedures.
The possibilities that VR presents us with our endless and we must decipher the unique power the medium offers and use it for the “greater good”. VR has proven the fact that “Imagination can become realities”, so we must shape our thoughts to bring out the best in this wonderful technology and hope that it impacts our society positively in the coming future.
