According to the report published by McKinsey & Company in October 2018 ‘The future of work: Switzerland’s digital opportunity’ digital technologies, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) can add one additional percent each year to Swiss productivity till the year 2030. A big portion of the productivity boost can come from leveraging the AI based technologies which offer to the companies an opportunity to innovate and adapt to new, digital business models. Nevertheless, in order to realize the productivity gain, Swiss companies need to embark on the journey of digital transformation and adopt AI in their operating models.
As stated by McKinsey Global Institute in the latest (February 2019) discussion paper ‘Notes from the AI Frontier — Tackling Europe’s gap in digital and AI’ European countries are lagging behind the world leaders (USA, China) in AI adoption. Further delay in starting an AI journey by the European companies is likely to weaken their digital positions and possibly can lead to missing out on a huge untapped potential. In order to leverage the AI opportunity and to close the gap to the world leaders, the referenced McKinsey research suggests that European countries and companies need to execute on the following main action items:
- development of Europe-wide, vibrant ecosystem of deep tech and AI startups
- acceleration of digital transformation and AI innovation among incumbent firms
