Interviewing for Student and Intern Programs at Unity
During any interview process, it’s normal for you to have a few questions. We know interviewing can be stressful, and sometimes it can feel like a full time job itself! We want to take some of that stress away and make sure every candidate goes into our interview process feeling as comfortable and prepared as possible.
Below is an outline of what you can expect, but don’t be afraid to ask any questions and follow up with your recruiter. We are here to help, and our interview teams are great sources of knowledge.
Resume Review
The University Recruiting team is currently reviewing your resume. We are a small but mighty team and appreciate your patience as we ensure to review each application that comes our way. You can expect to hear from us within 2–4 weeks of submitting your application. You will receive an email following up on your candidacy. If you are a match for the position we will reach out to set up a recruiter phone screen.
Recruiter Phone Screen
Your resume stood out, congrats! One of our University Recruiters will reach out to schedule a 20–30 minute phone call to go over the basics — your experience, skill sets, and logistics (ie, location, immigration status, etc.). We’ll also want to share a bit more about Unity as a company and answer any questions you may have. There’s no need to prepare anything technical for this first step!
Tips:
- When submitting your availability remember working hours are Monday — Friday, 9am-5pm. We love our jobs but also love the awesome work/life balance Unity provides!
- When on the call please be sure to be in a quiet space. Insider secret: the quad, on the bus, or walking to class aren’t the most ideal places to ace an interview.
- Be YOU! One of the amazing parts of Unity is the ability to be yourself. Try not to over think the small stuff. This first interview can be viewed as a casual conversation.
- Ask questions! As mentioned, the University Recruiting team is here as a resource to you. Every question is important so ask away!
Hiring Manager/Technical Screen
After you speak with one of our recruiters and if we think you could be a good fit, the next step can vary a bit depending on the role you’re interviewing for. Either way, this is your chance to show off your technical skills and go deeper into your experiences that would lend themselves to the role. It’s also a great opportunity to ask more role-specific questions! Below are the different screens you might set up for:
Hiring Manager call
- A conversational phone or Zoom video call — think Q&A
- The hiring manager will want to dive deeper into your skills and past projects you’ve worked on — be prepared with some examples you can speak on!
- Ask questions! This is a great opportunity to ask more about the team structure and what projects you would work on in this role
Hiring Manager call + Codility Live
- For this format, you’ll still be on a phone or video call with the manager in addition to working in Coderpad, a collaborative coding tool that allows the interviewer to see your work as you go
- You’ll have a chance to ask questions at the end of the call, so come prepared!
Coding challenge
- This is an at-home test you’ll take on your own time. It will either be held through Codility or sent to you via email. The hiring team will review your work once it’s submitted.
Tips for video calls & coding tests
- Make sure you’re in a quiet place without distractions
- Check that your internet connection is strong and your computer is charged
- Test any links about ten minutes before your interview — you don’t want any connection issues to cut into your interview time
- Don’t cheat! The Codility platform has different measures in place to detect any cheating
- You won’t be required to use a specific coding language, so choose whatever you’re most comfortable with!
Panel Interview
If the hiring manager agrees that you might be a fit, we’ll set up an onsite or virtual onsite (via Zoom) with other members of the team (typically 2–3 people). This will be a mix of technical and conversational interviews, and you’ll have a chance to ask any questions of your own. Your recruiter will prep you a few days before your interview on what to expect and what the team is looking for.
If you’re interviewing for a technical internship, it’s likely you’ll do some whiteboarding exercises. Don’t get too caught up on getting the right answer — it’s more important that the team sees how you think and work through a problem. And you can ask for help and advice! We don’t expect you to know everything, and that’s what teams are for!
The panel interview is a great opportunity to get a feel for the office and team culture, so don’t be afraid to ask questions! While we want to get a sense of how you would add to the team, it’s just as important that we are a fit for you, and your conversations with the team can give you a glimpse into daily life here at Unity.
Logistics
Whether your interview is virtual or onsite, one of our Recruiting Coordinators will send you a confirmation email once the interview is scheduled with all the info you need, such as directions, arrival information, and the interview panel. Your recruiter will check in with you before or after your interview as well!
What to wear
Our office is a casual environment, so wear whatever you’re most comfortable in. A suit is definitely not necessary!
Tips
- Practice with common interview questions, but don’t over-rehearse. We want to hear from the real you!
- Don’t be afraid to pause and think for a minute before answering a question, whether it’s a coding exercise or conversational.
- Be YOU! One of the amazing parts of Unity is the ability to be yourself. Try not to over think the small stuff
You can expect to hear from your recruiter with any next steps as soon as a decision has been made.
Reference Check
If the team would like to move forward after the panel interview, the recruiter will ask for two references from you:
- At least one must be a former manager/supervisor or professor
- A colleague or peer with whom you’ve worked on a professional or academic project
Your recruiter will ask you to share your references’ names, relationships to you, and email addresses. From there, our HR team will reach out directly to the provided references.
Tips
- Check in with your references before providing their info and make sure they’re willing to set up a call with our HR team. Even if you have used the person as a reference in the past, follow up again if it’s been more than a couple months since speaking with them
- If possible, provide more than two in case any of your references are difficult to get a hold of
- Tell your reference what company will be reaching out to them and a bit about the role so they are more prepared to give focused feedback
Next steps
Once the reference checks are cleared, your recruiter will reach out to set up a call regarding the offer.
We’re always working to ensure we’re being mindful of your time, so we aim to have as quick of a turnaround as possible. However, we do recruit on a rolling basis and have a lot of roles to fill, so we appreciate your patience with the process! Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you might have throughout your candidacy.
