There are so many great places on campus to meet a friend for a chat, settle down with your laptop and refuel, or curl up for a spot of hygge and enjoy a good book.

Here are our favourite cafés on campus, what are yours?

Roger Stevens Café

Also fondly known as Waterside Café, this open plan café sits at the heart of campus, on the ground floor (level 6) of Roger Stevens building, overlooking the sustainability pond.

There’s plenty of seating — so whether you want to relax in an armchair, catch up with friends, or get down to some work, longer opening hours make it the perfect spot for breaks between lectures and meetings throughout the day. Find Roger Stevens Café.

Business School Café

Over in the Business School Maurice Keyworth building on the Western Campus, you’ll find this light and airy split-level café, with a great range of food and drinks. Downstairs is a big, open space with plenty of tables to grab a bite to eat and catch up with friends, or heading up the stairs will take you to a quieter and more chilled space with sofas and armchairs. Find Business School Café.

The Edit Room

The Edit Room, a cool, industrial café in the ground floor of the Edward Boyle library mixes funky colours, warm lightbulbs and exposed pipework. It’s perfect to meet up with friends, or settle down for a bit and recharge your phone or laptop — they’ve got loads of plug and USB sockets. During quieter times, it’s perfect to settle down in here with a drink and get that last bit of your essay sorted. Find The Edit Room.

Laidlaw Library

This is a great meeting place for you and your friends, and also watching the world go by with its tall windows and perfect people-watching views. If you’re visiting, check out the old photos of the Uni on the walls! Find Laidlaw Library Café.

Loma Café

A real hidden gem here — Worsley Café. Up on level 9 of the Worsley building, it offers craft coffee, unique salad, gluten and dairy free options and sandwich combinations and is well worth a visit, particularly if you’re looking for something healthy and different. The specially commissioned coffee blend from Dark Woods is definitely worth checking out if you’re nearby. Discover Worsley Café.

Baines Wing Café

Hidden in a secret courtyard and overlooked by the dramatic arched windows of the Great Hall, Baines Wing café is always worth a visit. It’s classy, outside atmosphere make it a firm favourite for those who have discovered it. Find Baines Wing Café.

Balcony

Another great spot in the Union, Balcony is upstairs from the refectory and a vibrant place for a lunch time trip to refuel. However, head along at quieter times of the day and you’ll find it great for picking up a hot drink and sitting in the booths. Alternatively, there’s the new area overlooking the staircase at the back of the union — ideal for working or catching up on social media! Discover Balcony.

Common Ground

Rising from the ashes of the former Hidden Café in the Union is Common Ground, a chic and busy place where you can usually get a seat. A great place to meet up with friends, or, if you’re wanting a bit of an escape, head down to the far end for settees and comfy chairs. A varied and decent menu in here means it’s a great spot and if you’ve not been yet, definitely get it on the list! Find Common Ground.

Fuse

Fuse is a cheeky new upstart in the café culture on campus. Right up on the top of campus in Chemical and Process Engineering (opposite the Library pub), its retro colours and patterns make for a perfect backdrop to refresh, relax and unwind. Keep an eye out for the board games too! Find Fuse.

Hugo

How could we forget Hugo? This cheeky chappie has been dispensing great hot drinks on the go for a while now, and has become a must-visit place on the way onto campus after those chilly Hyde Park walks into lectures. Discover Hugo.

Parkinson Court

Here’s one you might have missed — nestling in the ornate Parkinson Court up by Chemistry, it’s a surprisingly intimate place to sit and work, or pick up a hot drink on those cold mornings. Find Parkinson Court Café.
