Eight Ways to Prepare for College

It’s no secret that adapting to college can be challenging, as many students leave their hometowns for the opportunity at an exceptional education and lifelong memories and friendships. To help make the transition to life in Lincoln easier, here are eight ways you can start preparing for college.

Start a packing list

There are few things as frustrating as forgetting your toothbrush, leaving behind your favorite pillow or blanking out on grabbing shower shoes. Start a packing list sooner rather than later and continue adding to the list as things come to mind!

Save, save, SAVE

Whether you put a dollar a day away or a whole paycheck from a summer job, invest in your future early and often! Attending college brings on new expenses, like textbooks and dorm supplies, that add up rather quickly. Start putting money aside now to relieve future stress.

Research RSOs

If we could rank one of the most highly recommended ways to get involved on campus and make friends, joining Recognized Student Organizations might land the top spot. At Nebraska, there are hundreds of RSOs, and there truly is something for everyone. Begin browsing this list and see what sparks interest. Feel like there’s one missing? You can create your own!

Consider a campus job

Campus jobs are not only a great way to fund the purchase of textbooks, studying materials and personal items, but it’s also an opportunity to connect with your peers and get to know the campus community on a deeper level. Check out this list and keep an eye out on Handshake.

Connect with campus peers

During your first days and weeks on campus, there are numerous activities and events aimed at introducing you to campus, the community and lifelong friends. Events like Big Red Welcome are designed to connect you to your new home. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on these opportunities! Grab your roommate or knock on your neighbor’s door and start falling in love with Dear Old Nebraska U.

Plan your schedule

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has numerous majors, minors, certificates and academic programs to immerse yourself in during your time on campus. Learn more about these opportunities and look into classes to enroll in in the next few years! Need a little additional help? Don’t be afraid to talk to your advisor to ensure you fulfill your degree requirements to graduate.

Find a planner

Having a planner in college is as important as Herbie is to game day at Nebraska. Many students live and breathe by their planners as it can help organize assignments, exams, RSO meetings and personal agendas. Whether you build one on a laptop or find an old-fashioned paper one, find what will work best for you!

Spend time with family and friends

One of the most challenging aspects of jumping into college is leaving friends and family behind. Whether you are moving across the city or across the globe to come to Nebraska, make time to hang out with your loved ones — even virtually. You will never regret the quality time spent with the ones who supported you along the way.
