Go Big Grad Guide

Fireworks in the shape of Ns erupt behind Memorial Stadium as graduates watch. A graduate whose mortarboard reads “Huskers” is centered in the foreground.

Congratulations, Huskers! You’ve made it to graduation. Before commencement weekend begins, take a moment to think through anything you might need to take care of ahead of time. From finding the perfect spot to take your graduation pictures to booking dinner reservations, we’ve got you covered.

Getting your cap & gown

Though the first commencement ceremony for the University of Nebraska was in 1872, the cap and gown tradition didn’t catch on until the 1890s. Today, the cap and gown are a staple of the graduation experience. Each year, Nebraska Alumni puts on Gradfest, a fun event for Huskers to purchase their cap and gown, grab a snack, and have fun with games and other activities.

Decorating your mortarboard

After picking up your cap and gown, have some fun with your cap! Decorating your mortarboard is a classic way to get creative with your cap for the ceremony — and help your friends and family find you in the sea of grads. Whether it’s a quote that’s inspired you over your college years or a shout-out to someone who’s supported you, there are a world of possibilities when it comes to decorating your mortarboard. Not sure where to start? Check out the university’s Pinterest page for mortarboard inspiration from fellow Huskers.

Grabbing the perfect photos

Whether you’re taking individual pictures or getting a group of people together, there are plenty of picture-perfect spots to grab your graduation pictures. While some students head to famous campus spots like Memorial Stadium or the Wick Alumni Garden, there are also several spots around Lincon for you to check out. Check out our list here.

Prepping for clear bag policies

Most large venues in Lincoln maintain a clear bag policy. Save yourself from day-of issues by prepping a clear bag that meets the requirements of your commencement venue, whether at Memorial Stadium, Pinnacle Bank Arena or the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Trust us, you’ll thank yourself when you don’t have to take the walk back to store your bag.

Hitting the town for a meal

Graduation season is a busy time in Lincoln, so be sure to plan ahead by making a reservation for your group. From sit-down restaurants in the Haymarket to spots out on the south side of town, you’re likely to run into wait times and may have to stop at different spots to find availability without reservations. Not sure where you want to go? Check out some local favorites here.
