Husker How to: Spring Cleaning

Spring is the perfect time for fresh beginnings. And what better way to usher in a new start than clearing out the old things in our lives? Lucky for you, there are spots on campus that can help with your spring cleaning goals! Read on to learn how to put your clutter to good use this year.

Clothing Swap

Got a couple shirts hanging in your closet that are collecting dust? Then it’s time to find them to a new home! Do a deep clean of your closet, then take your unwanted clothes to a clothing swap with your fellow UNL students. As a part of this year’s Earthstock festivities, Huskers can attend a clothing swap on April 12, 14 and 16. There you can find new owners for your old clothes, and maybe even find a couple new (to you!) pieces for your closet. Learn more here.

You can also donate your clothes to the UNL LGBTQA+ Center’s Lavender Closet! Currently, the closet isn’t taking any new donations due to COVID-19 but check back in soon.

If you’re hoping to impact those in our Lincoln community, the People’s City Mission also accepts clothing — and other donations — at their Help Center and in Toss Boxes around the city.

Husker Pantry

Spring cleaning also applies to your cabinets! Clear out those unused goods and take them to the Husker Pantry. The Husker pantry accepts unopened, unexpired food and hygiene products. They also accept other things like school supplies and cleaning products. If you have any new items that you aren’t going to use, consider dropping them off there. Learn more about what items the pantry needs here.

UNL Recycling Locations

Now let’s get to the actual clutter. Scrap paper pieces, old notes and class handouts are our main sources for extra clutter. But there are also lots of other little things that pile up around your place, like cardboard boxes. And don’t even get us started on plastic water bottles! Gather up all your recyclable goods and take them to one of our UNL recycling stations. Find your on-campus recycling station location here.

Now that you know where to go, it’s time to get your clean on! Turn on some good tunes (we recommend our Mood Booster playlist), open up those windows and let the spring cleaning commence.
