Sports Media and Communication

Ashley Beckman, a sports media and communication major, is an intern with Nebraska Athletics Marketing and Fan Experience. She works at the men’s basketball games, shown here at the Huskers vs Maine game on November 7, 2022.

Nebraska is home to one of the nation’s first bachelor’s degree programs in Sports Media and Communication at a Power Five conference university. Students involved in the program are given the rare opportunity to learn through specialized classroom studies and solving real-world challenges in the sports industry. Courses such as broadcasting, journalism, and analytics gear young professionals for the “big game” after graduation.

Kiewit Scholars Program

Nebraska Engineering students are building their future with the Kiewit Scholars Program. The College of Engineering and Kiewit Corporation have partnered to provide a small group of students with “unparalleled leadership opportunities and career development experiences” aiding in the advancement of future endeavors. 2023 is a big year for the program — Kiewit Hall is set to open as a hub for engineering students and will include classrooms, labs, student services, maker spaces, and outdoor plazas. Building world-class engineers starts with Nebraska Engineering.

Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts

Isaiah Griffith and Marley Hewitt, second-year students in the Carson Emerging Media Arts program, pose in Mo-Cap (motion capture) suits with a group of students being filmed. The suits with their infrared sensors (round dots vecroed to the suit) allow a ring of cameras to turn their motion into animated characters on screen.

A space for innovative minds to collaborate and create in the world of media arts, the Johnny Carson Center is certainly one-of-a-kind. Here, students are learning through filmmaking, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and more. Recently, the Johnny Carson Center was recognized as the first Big Ten university to earn the Hewlett Packard/Educause Campus of the Future designation. This will give students and the university the ability to learn from the newest high-tech equipment with partnerships from global Fortune 100 corporations. Did we mention the beautiful center is also featured in an HP advertisement? Now that’s cool.

Academic Alliance

Here at UNL, we take pride in being a part of the Big Ten. In athletics and academics, this conference is changing the collegiate experience for students. As the only major athletic conference with an Academic Alliance, UNL offers top-of-the-line academics, scholarships, aid and other key advantages for Huskers. This means cheaper textbooks, study abroad programs, increased library access across campuses and even the ability to take courses from other universities in the Big Ten. The university aims to encourage affordable access to a quality education. How special is that?

UNL is the prime spot for research, innovation, and those looking to make a global impact. The university is unique in being the only Carnegie Research-1 (R1) in the state of Nebraska. Our campus space fosters creative ideation with global reach. This is a significant advantage for Husker students as research and development resources are made available for educational thriving. We are making strides in readying surgical robots for space and even advancing wireless networks for agriculture fields. Huskers stay winning.

To Space and Beyond

Nebraska College of Law was the first in the nation to offer a doctoral degree in space, cyber and telecommunications law. This program is extensive and prepares students to succeed in future careers working for well-known names such as SpaceX and NASA. Matthew Schaeffer, professor of law and director of the college’s Space, Cyber and Telecommunications Law program, says this program will “widen opportunities for experienced lawyers and legal scholars to delve into very intricate and complex issues facing the regulation of outer space activities in an in-depth manner.” To infinity, and beyond, Huskers.

First Scholar Institution by the Center for First-Generation Student Success

First-generation students face a particular set of challenges when arriving on campus. That’s why our university goes above and beyond in supporting this group. UNL has been recognized as a First Scholar Institution for its “commitment to advancing the outcomes of first-generation students through improving both first-generation student success initiatives and institution-wide approaches.” As a first-generation student at Nebraska, you are granted the chance to move in early while participating in a foundational event introducing you to the university.
