In the mood to get out of town without committing to a flight and the stresses that come with it? We’ve got you covered. Be it spending a day of adventure at an amusement park or shopping and exploring museums, there are several spots you can visit for the perfect day trip.

Kansas City

Kansas City is a three-hour drive from Lincoln and has plenty of fun options to fill your day. Go shopping in the Country Club Plaza, catch a concert or opt for a day at Worlds of Fun or Oceans of Fun. If you’re a BBQ lover, you’ll be sure to find something tasty at famed spots like Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que or Arthur Bryant’s.

Ponca State Park

Ponca State Park is less than three hours away by car and is a great spot for a day of hiking or even camping for the weekend. Missouri River access allows room for water activities like canoeing or kayaking — both of which can be rented from the university’s Outdoor Adventure Center. Don’t forget to visit the notable “Towers of Time” rock formations and waterfall.

Ashland

From the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum and shopping at the local stores to the range of spots to take in nature, Ashland is a perfect spot for a day trip. Love the outdoors? Don’t forget to visit Mahoney State Park — where you’ll find paddle boarding, horseback riding, putt-putt golf, a water park and more.

Branched Oak Lake

Branched Oak Lake is the perfect place to get away for the day to swim, rent a boat or just hang out and grill outside with friends or family. If you’re a fan of camping, check out one of the multiple campgrounds surrounding the lake.

Omaha

Omaha is one of the best spots to get away for the day without committing to a full-on vacation. Filled with unique neighborhoods like Little Bohemia and The Old Market, you’re sure to find something to do. Try a new restaurant, catch a movie or live show at a local theatre, or head to the CHI Health Center to watch the Omaha Supernovas volleyball team.

Nebraska City

Nebraska City is an hour-long drive from Lincoln and has a range of activities to fill up your day. Check out historic firetrucks at the Nebraska City Museum of Firefighting or spend the day taking in the views or exploring the treetop village at Arbor Day Farm.

Can’t make it out of town? Fear not. We’re confident there is something new for you here in the capital city. Check out hidden gems like the American Museum of Speed or Robber’s Cave, eat at one of many restaurants serving cultural cuisines, or explore a new neighborhood you haven’t heard of.
