yabai is a window management utility that is designed to work as an extension to the built-in window manager of macOS. — yabai GitHub

Disclaimer: yabai only works for specific versions of macOS see their GitHub for more information.

Yabai is a tiling window manager similar to ones on Linux like awesomeWM, xmonad, qtile, etc. Whether you know what a tiling manager is or not, it is definitely worth a try, because similar to Neovim/Vim, it is all keyboard based. However, I will like to warn you, getting into tiling window managers is equivalent to getting into Neovim/Vim. It takes forever to master but is worth the time.

Tiling window managers are basically keyboard-based desktop environments. They allow for movement, resizing, and positioning of windows to all be done through the keyboard, making actions quick and snappy.

There are two paths for installing and configuring yabai.

  1. Partially disabling System Integrity Protection (SIP)
  2. Leave System Integrity Protection enabled

Disabling SIP allows for more advanced features and customizability like:

  • Instant space change
  • Animations
  • No shadow
  • Window opacity
