“Mediocrity attacks excellence” — I can’t recall exactly where or when I first heard the phrase. Since then, I’ve encountered it in a few different contexts. Every time I hear the phrase, it catches my attention. It really does a good job of capturing the interaction between the complacent and the ambitious, highlighting not just the conflict but also the influence they have on each other. For me, it is a quick check and balance: What mindset is driving me right now?

When I was in the military, the Air Force’s core value of “Excellence in All We Do” helped me truly understand the concept of “Excellence.” But not at first. Early in my military career, it was just a slogan on walls and letterhead. But, over time, it evolved from a routine slogan to a core element of my personal and professional ethos. It became a lens through which I viewed every challenge and opportunity. It taught me that excellence isn’t about a single act or achievement but a consistent, deliberate approach to life and leadership.

As we delve deeper, we’ll see how embracing this mindset of excellence can profoundly affect both professional and personal realms. We’ll explore strategies to cultivate this mindset, ensuring that our actions align with our goals, and understand how this pursuit of excellence can be a continuous journey, enriching every aspect of our lives.

Consider a friend of mine, now a tremendously successful executive. His background, which could be seen as typical, extraordinary, or challenging depending on the perspective of whom you ask, is not the key to his success. It’s his actions that define him.

He begins each day at 5 AM, dedicating the early hours to self-care and family, establishing a solid foundation before facing the day’s demands. This considered and consistent routine prepares him for what he calls his ‘sweaty armpit moments’ — those critical leadership challenges like negotiating tough deals, resolving conflicts within his team, or making complex strategic decisions that shape the company’s future. Let’s face it: no one enjoys sweaty armpit moments. Sure, if you are successful, they can be exhilarating, but the doubt and fear are real for all of us. For him, it is his commitment to excellence that drives him to confront these moments head-on.

As a highly accomplished leader, he doesn’t spend his days envying others. Does that mean there is no one he could envy? Definitely not. He runs in a circle of success. He sees successful people all the time. But instead of choosing envy, he celebrates the success of his peers, drawing inspiration from their achievements to fuel his journey. This mindset shifts the focus from a comparative to a growth-oriented perspective, which is essential for anyone aiming to escape mediocrity.

This approach underscores the principle that excellence is not about where you start but about maintaining a relentless pursuit of your goals and the resilience to embrace every challenge as a stepping stone to greater success. Whether someone looks just like you or comes from a completely different walk of life, the energy spent tearing them down is energy that could be spent building your path to success.

Embracing a culture of excellence means recognizing that where you start does not dictate where you finish. It means understanding that each of us has the power to rise above our circumstances through action, dedication, and perseverance. Don’t let the distractions of what others have or haven’t done limit your potential. Strive for excellence, not excuses.

Success isn’t about lamenting over obstacles or trying to overcome every barrier at once but setting a sustainable pace for growth and achievement. Decide what a successful life looks like for you, plan thoughtfully, and engage relentlessly. And stop worrying about others’ paths. If you must look at others, do so to learn, not to envy or diminish their successes.
