Uncertain times?

Climate change, refugees, threat of nuclear holocaust and the list went on and on until every newspaper and online media proclaimed the end of our world. Luckily, through the fog of death and horror a voice of optimism could be heard.

Though this voice came from a very unsuspected source — a statistician, of all living things — it was filled with truth. This man was Hans Rosling, a stat-guru from Sweden, that took me be storm by stating and imperically backing the fact that the world is actually much better of than we think it is, or as the media is portraying it.

For me, this started a wave of optimism I have been surfing ever since. We are actually taking baby steps towards a better future every day. This was huge for me. It meant that I didn’t have to fight a deteriorating trend and a world of bad and evil. The world is filled with good people doing what they can to improve their surroundings, and amongst them are a few rotten apples that are noisy and soak up all the attention. This — for me- is the power of statistics and science in general. It is a way for us to come nearer a truth and certainty, that is much needed in what one could think are very uncertain times.

It is with this feeling of optimism and trust in the bright minds of the world to inlighten and improve — that I much look forward to meet and interact with some of these bright minds at UNLEASH 2017.
