Michael Meyer, a wide-smiling Californian with a (new) knack for lefts, not only plays tennis like a Williams but also advises Californian cities on financial strategy like a boss!

He tells us why he stole some time away from his adorable niece and nephew in San Diego last April to surf and get his work done remotely.

Why did you decide to go on Unleash Surf?

My friend introduced me to Unleash Surf. I had already spent the previous three years visiting Central America to explore the surf and culture but had been looking to get down to South America next. The ability to work remotely and hang with other like minded people from all around the world was a huge draw. I also found Amy and John’s story inspiring and I wanted to be a part of that.

What stood out for you about your Unleash Surf experience?

I didn’t really prep too much for the trip, so arriving in a small, old surf town like Huanchaco was refreshing. I was able to quickly get a good flavor for the local customs, history and cuisine through Unleash who brought in passionate people from the area to coach surfing, teach history, give spanish lessons (which i loved and want to continue!), and coordinate awesome short day trips.

I learned that I could knock out productive “half days” for work, and hold the same conference calls and video calls that I normally do at home. I got better at surfing left — even though I still prefer rights!

Connecting with the other Unleashers was amazing — everyone just brought such awesome energy and a totally different background to share. Surfing Chicama (after a few wipeouts of course) and catching the longest wave of my life were highlights for me. Sharing an apartment with the Aussie Stefan was a perk — and our extra strong morning pre-surf coffees and early evening pisco sours became a favourite ritual.

Seeing others bring their young kids was also inspiring and such amazing exposure for them. One day I’d like to do the same.

I learned I like Thai massage (there’s an amazing Thai masseuse in town!), pisco sours and I never got tired of eating ceviche!

It was such a rich experience that would not have happened if I tried to just do this kind of trip solo.

3 tips for someone going on Unleash for the first time?

  1. Prepare physically. Even though I live in San Diego and surf multiple times a week, a bit of extra physical training helps prevent fatigue.
  2. Prepare your gut a bit. Some of us got a bit belly sick so I think some probiotics or supplements would be helpful to prevent that.
  3. Try to go for longer than 2 weeks. I did two weeks on Unleash, which was amazing, but if i could’ve stayed longer I would’ve. And then pad some extra time to take some short trips from Huanchaco and explore more of Peru. Chicama is a must — especially if you have time to stay in the boutique hotel there and eat in their restaurant.
