Deep learning applications beyond Computer Vision
The year is 2021. From a theoretical idea originating from 1943, deep learning software and hardware has developed over the decades to become a useful tool in our everyday lives. Below I share both deep learning applications that already are in use today and those that are being developed and tested as we speak to be used in the coming years.
Part 1: Deep learning application that already are in use today
Computer vision This type of application involves computers processing, analyzing, and making sense from visual images. For example, iPhone uses facial recognition to unlock your phone.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) This type of application involves speech recognition, answering questions, classifying document, search engines and more. Virtual Personal Assistants is one type of this kind of deep learning application that can be found in your everyday life: Xiaomi, Siri on your iPhone, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Google Home, etc.
Medicine Deep learning programs are now more accurate than radiologists at determining if a tumor is malignant or benign from a CT scan. There are many more applications that are in use. You can search “deep learning applications in medicine” for more.
Image Generation When you take a photo with your smartphone, this type of deep learning application allows you to quickly switch between different color options, image resolutions and styles.
Recommendation/Personalization Systems This type of deep learning is probably best known in e-commerce, news sites, and social media for showing you the images and information that fit your past behavior. Examples of this at work are Google Web search; Taobao product recommendations; and your news feed on JinRiTouTiao.
Playing games Deep learning programs have already exceed our best human Chess and Go grandmasters. Also, when we choose to play against the computer in online strategy games, we are playing with artificial intelligence and the deep learning component adapts to our play style.
Many other applications of deep learning have surpassed the efficiency of human tasks in many fields. To learn more, you can search online or click into the references I include at the end of this article. This will give you a broader view of where deep learning is in 2021.
Part 2: Deep learning application that are being developed and tested as we speak that could come online in the coming years…
Self-Driving Vehicles This type of deep learning is being developed and tested as we speak. Computer vision is one type of deep learning that this type of application relies on. If implemented correctly, it could potentially reduce fatal car accidents to near zero.
Biology Deep learning could evolve to the point where it is able to recombine DNA to create new organisms and augmented humans.
The Singularity & Robotics Deep learning could potentially evolve to the point where machine intelligence surpasses human intelligence, this point is referred to as the singularity. Combining the intelligence of the singularity with robotics, is the next big step of human technology innovation to resonate with the natural world around us.
