We’ve talked about it for a while now, but what the hell is this Forty-Two thing, anyway? Well, here’s a quick video primer:
As my senior year of high school wound down, I decided to write a commencement speech I could potentially deliver at graduation.
Knowing myself, there was no way I could write a rosy speech full of sunshine and butterflies. Therefore, I decided to chart the ups and downs of the high school experience, appreciating and critiquing as I saw fit.
I knew the school would never select my piece. And I was right — I didn’t even make the final ten. But I knew I had something worthwhile; I just didn’t know through what medium my words could be appreciated.
And until this point, many people have struggled with this same dilemma. That’s where Forty-Two slots in: it’s like Odyssey, except with an actual editing staff that shares your same passion.
Let me backtrack a little bit. For starters, Forty-Two is a reference to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, in which our main characters find out that the answer to the ultimate question — ”What is the meaning to Life, the Universe, and Everything?” — is simply a number, 42.
Part of the joke that beloved author Douglas Adams touches on is this notion that we can possibly qualify and quantify every intricate little detail known to mankind. That we can sum up the entirety of the human experience with something as quaint as a pair of numerals.
This is, obviously, entirely impossible. But why not provide a space in which day by day, little by little, we can learn more about the world our fellow humans are living? And during this fast-paced era where the only constant is constant change, what could quite possibly be a better perspective to explore than that of the young adult?
Forty-Two is that space for your voice to be heard. Think people should know about a gun hoax on your college campus in wake of one of the deadliest mass shootings in history? Or what about the underlying assumption that everyone was on the same page when it came to rap and the ‘N’ word? How about something lighter, even, like a 19-year-old entrepreneur who made a minor fortune by reselling sneakers?
Our process is simple: write a piece on something you’ve encountered that you believe is worth sharing. Work with one of our editors, who you can bounce ideas off of and collaborate with in creating a professional product. Finally, publish and share it with a community of people that’s willing to discuss what exactly it is you have to say.
That’s it. That’s Forty-Two. We’re excited to build this thing with you!
