This Week In UNPLUGG’D (3/13/2019)
A weekly newsletter dedicated to what we’ve done, what we’re doing, and what’s next from the good folks over at UNPLUGG’D
Sports
- On the 20th Anniversary of the Minnesota Timberwolves trading away Stephon Marbury, Terry Horstrom writes about what those young Timberwolves teams meant to Minnesota and how the trade has shaped basketball on the Frozen Tundra ever since.
- In the fourth installment of our ‘Baseball Matters’ podcast Chris Burton, Andrew Golden, and Ben Bokun break down the American League in the run-up to Opening Day.
- This week’s ‘Unplugg’d NBA Show’ features Karim Noorani and Andrew Golden talking the Lakers woes, the Rookie Of the Year race, and the premier teams out East.
#KEYANDPEELEBRACKET
In a continuation of what will be a month-long series, the Churlish, Chainwax, and Obama regions of the bracket were released. Remember, the sketches that will advance — and eventually be named champion — will be determined by your votes. Head on over to the regional articles or our Twitter account to make sure your voice is heard!
Culture
- In the wake of a disappointing Oscars season, Karim Noorani writes about one of his favorite movies of the year, Leave No Trace, and the confusing nature of a movie that received so much critical acclaim, yet so little recognition from the Academy.
- On the first-ever mailbag episode of ‘bet!’, Abriel Siregar and Chris Burton dive into their social media mentions to address fan questions such as “what’s the over/under on the number of sneezes before a teacher thinks it’s fake?” and “which movie was more successful: Captain Marvel or How to Train Your Dragon 3?”
What’s Up
On Wednesday, Andrew Fenichel discusses one of his favorite new albums, Juice WRLD’s ‘Death Race for Love’.
Winners and Losers: Race Walking Becomes Mainstream
From the Vault
In the wake of The New York Times’ feature on Raheem Sterling, his initiatives to fight off the narrative of black superstar athletes, and the media’s constant mischaracterization of Sterling as a villain, it’s a perfect time to take a look back at an article written by Resident Brit Jamie Sewell this past summer. The article may have been published nearly 9 months ago, but it’s pretty clear that not much has changed since.
What’s Next
- We filmed Episode 2 of ‘The Hot Takes Show’ on Tuesday! Look out for all sorts of promotional material — including trailers, graphics, and what-have-you — in the coming days. Tentative release date of next Friday!
- Also, check out Amelia Graber-Lipperman’s piece on the recently-released Captain Marvel. It’ll touch on the Marvel superfan’s thoughts on what the film means for the MCU, female representation in movies, and more.
- Finally, NGL had Spikeball Founder and CEO Chris Ruder on ‘The G-L Review’ this week! They talked about appearing on Shark Tank, the popular trend of shared spaces, the future of the sport of roundnet, and more. Look for that to drop Friday morning!
