Looking Forward to the Crisis?

Should Millenials Cry or Smile?

Every now and then we read predictions regarding the upcoming economic crisis. Usually the authors suggest 2019 or 2020 for the break through. Every now and then we read about millenials and how they are lazy and entitled and how the crisis will finally sort them out.

I’ve seen people, often recruiters, managers or business owners, complaining about the available workforce an even stating that the crisis will restore modesty and humility in the working people. I have been told numerous times that I will come back and beg for a job.

Consequences For the Business People

I understand these people might well be driven by hatred and frustration rather than by logic and reason and that I might just discard their nonsense without a reaction. But I must admit that for me it is still hard to accept how disgraceful and misguided they are at the same time.

In my layman’s opinion, when businesses go down, the recruiters and the general managers are those who’s getting into serious trouble finding new opportunities and proving their value. The next troubled groups might be office workers with just generic skills but also specialists doing unique jobs for companies being closed down.

Am I Really Worried?

I started my business back in 2008 right at the beginning of the last so called financial crisis. I was an employee from 2012 to 2017 only to return to freelancing at the predicted onset of the next crisis.

I can’t resist worrying about the crisis. I can guess it will affect many people and I feel sympathy for them. I identified a number of risks for some of my business.

Will I Come Back Begging for a Job?

Hopefully not. I consider myself a problem solver and a constant learner. I’m going to use my skills and flexibility to find my way through and I’m taking measures to avoid being caught unprepared.

However, even if I get hit by the crisis, I don’t think these mean people would enjoy the luxury of laughing at me. If a crisis strikes hard there will probably not be that much time for grumbling and complaining and their position won’t be very enviable.

Dedicating too much energy to looking forward to seeing other people struggling on the job market might well be one of the steps to put yourself into that very situation.

My Action Plan

From perspective of my business I have no other choice than to see the next crisis as an opportunity. Last time I wasn’t prepared. I refused many crisis related deals because I simply didn’t believe the selected way would work. Today I would be brave enough to speak out and discuss better solutions with the customers.

What is your action plan for the crisis?
