The UnSchool Emerging Leaders Fellowship alumni community is filled with incredible boundary-pushing change agents who are working in diverse and divergent ways around the world. In this series, we interviewed a few alumni from our June 2016 São Paulo adventure to hear more about their UnSchool experience and see what they’re up to now.

Meet Mohammed Bashkeel, a 28-year-old intra/entrepreneur. He joined us from Abu Dhabi, UAE, but currently lives in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, where he is doing his MBA.

“It’s definitely something mind-changing’

What do you do?
Prior to the fellowship in São Paulo, I was working in Corporate Sustainability for a petrochemical company. Simultaneously, I also co-founded a startup that runs the city’s bikeshare network to help introduce a new healthy and environmentally friendly way to get around. I decided to pursue my MBA following the fellowship and now study at the Wharton School of Business.

Why did you come to the UnSchool?
I came to the UnSchool to understand what it really means to challenge the status quo. To stop holding back by learning from, and becoming part of an ecosystem of purpose-driven leaders. I wanted to equip myself with a new mindset to address the complex problems we face in our world, in society, and in business.

What did you get out of it?
In addition to the mind-bending experience and wealth of information I got out of it, one of the biggest learnings (which we experienced firsthand) was that anybody is able to activate change. It has also helped fill the gap between knowledge and action and inspired a sense of commitment to making a difference.

What are you working on now?

Apart from being a full-time student, I am also director of education for the Innovation and Design Club as well as a team member planning the yearly social impact conference. We’re looking forward to hosting some awesome events, inviting speakers who are making a difference, and spreading the word to get more people involved in social change.
