It could help you save a lot of money.

Before you hand over your credit card to cover your medication’s copay at the pharmacy, ask, “What’s your pharmacy’s cash price for this medication?”

You might be surprised to find that it’s lower than what you’d pay using your health plan.

That’s what happened to Z. Ming Ma a few years ago. PBS documented how his health plan’s cost for the generic blood pressure medication telmisartan was $285 for a 90-day supply. By paying the pharmacy’s cash price, he was able to spend only about $40 (get it through Blink Health for even less).

New research shows that patients pay more than the actual cost of the drug about 25% of the time when they use their coverage. The study found this practice happens more often with generic medications than it does with brand medications.

While you’re asking about the pharmacy’s cash price, don’t forget to check Blink, too, to see if you can save even more. (We also offer a Price Match Guarantee.)
