Our August Week 4 product update that we share internally with the Crew team, keeping them up to date on the product changes to Unsplash over the past week.

Unsplash Instant V2 🔥

Charles and Kirill Zakharov released the new version of our Chrome extension: Unsplash Instant.

The new release includes an overhaul of the visual design (similar to the new photo page, it’s lighter and more open), all new photos (there’s a new collection it pulls from), and the most requested feature: likes.

Kirill Zakharov also overhauled the microsite to use Statik (our internal site builder) and gave it a quick visual refresh.

Feed updates 🎲

Aaron Klaassen has been hard at work the past few months, with some help from Charles, building out V1 of the home feed. In V1, we’re basically bringing more photos to the homepage, with 10 photos being selected and published each day.

This initial version sets up the infrastructure for activities and the concepts of feeds in Unsplash, but it also (hopefully) gives us a quick-win by getting more quality content onto our highest traffic page.

In future versions we’ll be working towards a feed that is unique to the user and uses a number of data-points to serve a version of the feed that gets the highest engagement.

We’ll start rolling out the experiments for the feed this week, watching how the TTU compares to the control, especially with new and returning users.

  • Timothy added experimentation tracking to our stats
  • Charles fixed permissions on API endpoints with multiple permissions
  • I removed the last remaining non-React photo page, the private collections page, and transfered it over to React
  • Charles fixed a caching issue with badges on a user profiles
  • Kirill Zakharov did some CSS refactoring to keep our CSS small (48kb) and performant. CSS stats ⟶
  • Meanwhile, Naoufal Kadhom sat on a beach in Indonesia 🍹

TTU: 4.14M minutes (+8.10% over the same week a month ago)
