Each week we share short snippets, direct from the photographers themselves, that give a brief background to some of the photos that are available on Unsplash along with a little more about the people who took them.

In 2013 I visited my relatives on Forrester Station in the Queensland outback for a week. One evening I helped drive a herd of young cattle back to their paddock. I noticed how amazing the golden sunset light looked through the dust clouds thrown up by the cattle. The next day I brought my camera along and managed to capture these incredible light conditions. To me that shot perfectly captures the earthy serenity I so love about the Australian outback, along with the warm and calm character of the people working that incredible landscape.

About the photographer: Tobias Keller is an Earth Scientist, originally from Switzerland, and now working at Stanford University in California. He loves travelling, being in nature, and visiting great cities. His best companion is his wife Olivia, who’s pictured riding the horse to the right in the photo. He got into photography to capture some of the great moments they experience while travelling together.

This photo of KLCC was taken with my iPhone6 in 2015 September. I was at KL tower and from there the view was so amazing with the haze surrounding the tall skyscrapers, sky covered with stormy clouds lighting up with the rays of setting sun.

I took this shot while on a 3 day road trip with some friends through California’s Big Sur. On the last day I decided to get up a little earlier everyone and go exploring. I found this wonderful little creek in a small forest off of Highway 1 and thought it would be perfect for some aerial photography. These days I never travel anywhere without my drone. Being able to shoot from any angle, at any height, from any distance has been the single biggest game changer in all my years taking photos.

About the photographer: Richie Nolan, 26, is originally from Ireland but now lives and works in San Francisco a designer and photographer.

This particular shoot happened after work on a Wednesday and it was pure magic. Originally, Cicely had asked me to take photos for her LinkedIn profile, so we started down the street at an abandoned gas station. I had an hour before I needed to be somewhere, so once we were done with the “professional” photos, we drove down to 410 Vintage Market and took some impromtu 60s inspired shots. Cic, being the cute Brit she is, has such a unique look and I absolutely adore her style. She was clearly in her element; she could have been a 60s movie star.

About the photographer: Brooke Cagle is a 26 year old native Arkansan; currently in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The image was taken during a photo trip to Chicago last fall with a friend. It was taken downtown, at the metro station for Adams and Wabash. Prior to the trip, I read about the introduction of steel to the building of skyscrapers at the end of the 19th century. Builders in Chicago led the way. The image is intended to illustrate Chicago’s rich architectural history as the city of skyscrapers. It includes older buildings in the foreground that lead you to the latest (2009) skyscraper, the Trump Tower in the background. I am no fan of Mr Trump, but his building does help make the image. The elevated metro line further leads the viewer into the image.

I enter a geodesic dome structure, lit with red light. Inside there’s ten chairs with ten people wearing headphones and VR headsets. They can’t hear or see me, I’m invisible. I take pictures like a paparazzi hidden in plain sight, I must admit I’m a bit ashamed that this voyeuristic feeling is so thrilling. This photo is Camille, a friend of mine, immersed in a virtual reality experience at the “Festival tous écrans”, a place were they explore the relationship between cinema, television and new forms of digital creation.

About the photographer: Samuel Zeller is a 25 year old freelance photographer living in Geneva, Switzerland.

I took this photo at Glacier Point in Yosemite. We were running late and I was afraid that we were going to miss the red sunset tipping off of Half Dome. Fortunately we just made it in time to see the last few minutes of the sunset, and I was able to witness something which very few people get to appreciate. We spent the the rest of the evening at Glacier Point until we were able to see the magnificent Milky Way over Half Dome at around midnight. Yosemite Valley to me is just unreal. Quite unbelievable, how nature has crafted this perfection over millions of years of chaos!

About the photographer: Aniket Deole is 27 and lives in Mountain View, California.
