Finding cool on the world wide web
Fashion was my gateway to photography. Platforms like Tumblr and Lookbook.nu allowed anyone to publish their work. It’s why I got my first DSLR.
We no longer had to buy fashion from the runways. Instead, we found inspiration from within the community: To thrift, to splurge, to borrow from our parents’ closets. The more inspired we were, the more photos we took. It ultimately became the way we consumed fashion; and how we promoted cool.
In the past few years, the industry has changed its ways. Smartphones have become the tools we use to shop, shoot, and post. While the process to create has never been simpler, we now feel pressured to post more often than we’d like : to stay relevant, get new likes and followers. The speed in which we share information today doesn’t play well with the amount of time we spent to create cool. Today, streetwear — to wear clothes with logos — has become the world’s favorite way to dress. It’s definitely a lot easier to buy style than to create it… and that’s okay.
It’s okay because it forces some of us to yearn for something better. To find an alternative platform— a place where we can start creating again; where quality is valued, diversity celebrated, and creativity rewarded.
I’ve put together a list of photographers who continue to push for authenticity in street style. Their works show good personal style and incredible awareness of their subjects.
