What you need to know about the Barfield course

The disc golf course at Barfield Crescent park in Murfreesboro Is an easily accessible and beautiful course. I have played on over 15 courses in the Murfreesboro/Nashville area and it easily is in my top three. The course is offers two options. There is a 9-hole course that is more open as well as a full 18-hole course that utilizes the nearby wooded areas and a few more water hazards. The course allows for the possibility of highly competitive play with guarded holes and tough routes, as well as a super casual game in an open area to walk and play with friends.

Difficulty- As a whole the course can be fairly difficult. It begins with a fairly simple first throw with the basket around 350 feet away, but by hole four you find yourself staring over a pond wondering if you should take the risk or be safe and go around.

The back 9 is in fairly dense woods that require some tough maneuvering and can cause more than a little frustration. I would say the 9 whole option is a 5/10 and the 18 a 7/10 for the average player.

Course Terrain- The course as I said is beautiful. The front 9 is open and allows for a nice walk between throws as there are not many hills and the grass is always well kept. The back nine will take you through trees and climbing a few rocks and roots to find your disc but in my experience, it just added to the fun.

Uniqueness- There are a few things about this course that set it apart from others in the area.

All 18 holes have concrete tees that make for a great first throw. Around every basket is a circle of concrete as well to prevent mud but can make for some bad skips. Something that isn’t necessarily unique to Barfield, but it certainly great, is a warm-up basket next to the first tee.

The option of the 9-hole course is wonderful. Most courses around that offer a 9 hole option just use the front 9 of an 18. Barfield’s 9 whole course skips around a few holes. For example hole 8 on the short course is hole 11 on the long. This helps ensure you still play some of the best holes the course has to offer.

Overall, Barfield is a great course for the new player to walk through with friends and for the seasoned veteran looking for a fun game. Everyone I know that plays disc golf in the Murfreesboro area uses Barfield as their mainstay course. Being in a large park makes it a great environment to play casually and meet people and the fact that it close to so many restaurants and other things means that you can play this course, grab a bite to eat, still have time to enjoy more of what the city has to offer.
