Do you want to…see the world…experience new cultures, make the most of your education?

Then study abroad is for you.

The study abroad program at MTSU makes it possible for students to gain real-world experience in their field of study. Whether you are a fermentation science major, a business major, or undecided, there is an opportunity for you. Education abroad allows students to travel, immerse themselves in other cultures, and prepare for future careers while earning college credit! You will experience new aspects of your major and see how your interests apply to other countries around the world.

Still not sure if study abroad is right for you?

Why Study Abroad

Studies show that studying abroad can positively benefit the future success of students. Students who take the opportunity to participate in education abroad are twice as likely to find a job within the first 12 months of entering the workforce. The starting salary for many students who studied abroad is notably higher than that of their peers, who did not study abroad. The majority of employers have also admitted that skills learned during education abroad are useful in a work environment. The experiences obtained by those who study abroad are life changing. Being able to network with other students encounter other cultures gives students a new outlook. Developing students’ cross-cultural awareness prepares them for the workforce by creating a respectful understanding of coworkers and their experiences. Interacting with industry professionals and exploring job opportunities in your field of study can also help secure careers in the future.

Study Abroad Programs

MTSU and secondary programs offer many scholarships to students interested in education abroad. With a potential for thousands of dollars in scholarship awards, many are able to get study abroad trips mostly or completely paid for.

MTSU Signature Programs are MTSU faculty led, have a high level of support, are 2–4 weeks in duration, and earn 3–6 credit hours. These are typically summer courses.

Program Providers offer short-term (summer, winter) and long-term (semester, academic year) programs. These have a high level of support and provide students with a chance to study abroad with other U.S. and local (host country) students. Examples are programs offered through CIEE, ISA, and USAC.

Exchange Programs are long-term (semester, academic year) programs. They offer greater independence and the ability to study with local (host country) students. Tuition & fees may be paid to MTSU or to the provider, depending on the program.
