For some college students, scholarships are held hostage until they can meet the ransom by their captor, showing them a high achieving GPA. Others, passing is nothing short of a miracle, a miracle of which would be greatly appreciated so they will not have to repeat the class again.

No matter which side you fall under, Middle Tennessee State University offers its students with a wide variety of support programs in their academic careers. No matter the subject you are struggling with, MTSU offers some form of support in order to rescue your grade from the brink of no return.

One such case of this is the writing center, a place where you may go in order to get help with writing an essay or even get help on how to start the assignment. For long term projects, you can establish a writing partnership, collaborating with the same individual to aid you throughout the course of your designated project. For those who excel better in a group-oriented environment, there is the writing group section you can sign up for, working together as a team. Furthermore, the computers have been accommodated for students who have poor vision, aiding students to better see the computer screen.

What if English isn’t what is holding you back though? If you are like many of us, the only time you are good with numbers is when you are trying to calculate what grade you need in order to pass the class. Never fret; however, for MTSU offers a wide arsenal of support to make your proficiency in numbers go beyond calculating a passing grade, helping you throughout your math career.

Whether you are in college algebra, or struggling your way through calculus and beyond, MTSU has a math tutoring lab, founded inside the Kirksey Old Main, where struggling students can get help from one of the numerous tutors inside. All the tutors there understand the subject well and have been able to help students even in calculus 2 through their classes.

Another tutoring option available to students is Supplementary Instruction, commonly referred to as SI sessions. This form of tutoring allows students the flexibility to go to as many sessions as desired, going to tutoring tailored for their specific teacher and class.

Normally, a typical experience will be showing up and covering material that is closely related to what you went over in class that week, giving you an extra chance to catch up and really understand what you missed and were confused on, or even ask questions you did not have the chance to ask in class.

This is a team-oriented environment as well, emphasizing on group work with classmates in order to succeed together as a result. Most of these students will also be people from your class as well, helping to build relationships among one another as you struggle together.

What if numbers and essay’s are not the hindrance, but rather science? Perhaps it is a chance of an opportunity you are seeking or real experience that you are needing instead?

The Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) was established to grant students research opportunities and provide access to research facilities, hoping to further expand the field of science and grant many more successes in hands on research for a career in academia. This is further aided by the Undergraduate Research Center, designed to provide students with the knowledge and options for more hands-on research and activities that will benefit their career here.

There is even something for military students, or those looking for opportunities within the military with the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC). This program provides a broad overview of classes, as well as more military oriented classes for attending students. Upon completion, many head into the military as Second Lieutenants.

Lastly, if you are someone who excels by learning online, taking classes online, or would rather take things at your own pace, MTSU offers free online tutoring through Smarthinking for those taking online classes, and a platform called Lynda for learning on your own. Lynda, for those wanting to take things at their own pace, offer a variety of tutorial options on just about any topic you could think of, but primarily caters towards business and technology among other things.
