We’ve scooped the award for the best-performing NCTJ undergraduate course and our former students have been quick to take to social media to praise us.

The honour for being top of the NCTJ accredited courses league table was collected by long-serving lecturer Bernie Saunders, who leads the NCTJ liaison.

Here is a selection of praise for the course from our former students.

ESPNFC Assistant Editor Sean Walsh, tweeted: “A special group of people led by some of the smartest in the industry and achieving together, well done all @UoP_Journalism

Oskar Scarsbrook, who like Sean graduated last summer, tweeted: “This for sure proves what we knew all along, the teaching at Portsmouth is absolutely top class.”

Byron Melton, who graduated in 2017 and is now working at The News in Portsmouth joined in with: “We came to the right place!”

Features writer Emma Rossiter, who studied with us from 2014–17, and is now a features writer for magazines such as Womans Own and Chat said: “@UoP_Journalism still out here smashing it! So proud to be a part of Portsmouth!”

Freelance journalist Liam Connell, who graduated in 2016, and has worked on programmes for Channel 4 Dispatches tweeted: “100% deserved. Incredible course and staff, congrats @UoP_Journalism

“This for sure proves what we knew all along, the teaching at Portsmouth is absolutely top class.”

Our course won the award because the BA Journalism students who graduated in the summer of 2018 were the most successful in gaining the NCTJ Gold Standard Diploma — based on their performance in the NCTJ exams across their three years of study.

Sarah Hewson, from Sky News, who presented the awards, had high praise for lecturers and tutors teaching on all the NCTJ’s accredited courses and congratulated them on meeting the high standards the NCTJ set on behalf of the industry.

And staff at Portsmouth praised the students whose hard work achieved the honour.

“Our 2018 cohort were not only a fantastic bunch of young journalists but also just all round lovely people.”

Course leader Ian Tapster said: “The award is testament to the hard work and excellent attitude of the 2018 graduating cohort, as well as the commitment and enthusiasm of the journalism teaching team.”

Claire Perry tweeted: “Chuffed to bits with this — well done to the Class of ’18 for being pretty damn fabulous.”

James Dennis also took to Twitter to pay tribute to the students: “This is a testament to our 2018 cohort. They were not only a fantastic bunch of young journalists but also just all round lovely people. Congratulations to them for all of their hard work and dedication.”

And Mary Williams tweeted her congratulations: “It’s our boys (and girls) what won the award — NCTJ exam results from your year of graduates — so well done guys. Like Pompey we are top of the league!”

Gill Wray joined in with: “Even more reason to celebrate now.”
