Today is a special day, MaterialUp has been live for 6 months and it’s been a fantastic ride so far! The site is young, but it’s growing really strong: close to 1 million people have visited the site, but the best part is that a majority of you use the MaterialUp site regularly. Looking back at our story, we’re incredibly excited that you’re in this adventure with us, it means everything.

MaterialUp in numbers

MaterialUp was originally just a listing page with only 1 showcase a day. No votes, no comments, not even a way to login. Fast forward 6 months later, we have had over 1 million visitors, 10,000+ users, 20,000+ newsletter subscribers, over 35,000 upvotes and 2,000+ showcased Material Design examples and tools. The MaterialUp community is from all over the world and from any size of companies: Adobe, Google, Facebook, Trello but also small agencies and much talented freelancers.

First MaterialUp version

Who am I?

I’m Matt by the way, a ruby developer with a (very) soft spot for design. So much so that over a weekend last December I created MaterialUp simply to fulfill my personal need for really good Material Design examples. I submitted it on Product Hunt and that kickstarted the project creating a small but strong community for MaterialUp. I gradually interacted more and more with the community during these 6 months, receiving incredibly valuable feedback along the way. And that’s exactly why we’re here now; it’s truly unique and inspiring to build a product with such a vibrant community, thank you!

The MaterialUp mission

Today our focus is to give as much exposure and inspiration as possible to designers and developers. We’ve heard stories like a Dribbble user getting his first 50 followers from a MaterialUp post or others finding jobs at renowned companies in the US through MaterialUp. Enabling more amazing design to happen is our main goal and it will always be. Even though MaterialUp is far from being perfect, the feedback has been very positive so far and we can’t wait to share with you what we have in store for the next 6 months.

Material Design has a bright future, we believe it’s here to stay.

What’s next?

I’m looking to expand the team at the moment but my focus is the submission process and the search which I think need some significant improvements. Also, we’ll expand MaterialUp to more categories, but I can’t say too much about this for now, stay tuned.

Thank you!

Again, thanks for your contributions and visiting the site, it’s only been 6 months but I already learned a whole lot from you and I can’t wait to see how the site will evolve. If you have any feedback, suggestions or crazy ideas, please email me at matt@materialup.com, I read all emails!
