The search for this year’s muse and mascot officially marked the start of “KaSCIyahan 2017: Kalamnan” yesterday with a Filipino superheroes theme at the College of Science (CS) atrium.
Institutes including the Institute of Environmental Science and Meteorology pit their mascots and sidekicks in the opening of the annual sportsfest hosted by the CS Student Council.
The contestants had their own gimmicks while they introduced themselves in elaborate costumes. The pair from Molecular Biology and Biotechnology joked, “Anong bato ang walang kwenta? Bato dela Rosa,” in an apparent swipe against the chief of the national police. The joke was met with laughs and applause. The mascot-sidekick pairs also performed in the talent show, singing, dancing and/or acting.
Criteria for judging included costume design (50%), talent (45%) and audience choice (5%) through institute attendance and “piso votes.”
Institute of Mathematics won the show with a score of 87.21 points. Math also won Best in Costume and Best in Talent.
Following Math is the National Institute of Physics pair Darth Vega and Bortang Volta who placed as 1st runners-up, garnering 80.21 points and the Institute of Chemistry pair PedROH PenduCOOH and Mulawene with a score of 79.93 points, placing as 2nd runners-up.
Last year’s KaSCIyahan theme was mythical creatures.
